Description

The Jaguar XJ refers to the first generation of the legendary British luxury saloon. Introduced in 1968, the model underwent a facelift in 1973 with the Series II and again in 1979 with the Series III and remained in production until 1992. The XJ was the final design by William Lyons, the founder of Jaguar. The XJ 6, featuring an inline six-cylinder engine with a displacement of 2.8 or 4.2 litres, was unveiled at the Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris on 26 September 1968. In March 1979, the third generation of the Jaguar XJ, which had been restyled by Pininfarina, was unveiled in Scotland. The Series III was recognizable by its larger windows, the radiator grille with vertical slats, redesigned, larger rear lights and rubber-clad bumpers. On the 4.2-litre model, the carburetors were now generally replaced by a fuel injection system. Production of the XJ 6 ceased in 1986, although deliveries to the USA continued until early 1987. Its successor was not unveiled there until May 1987. However, the Series III with a V12 engine continued to be produced until 1992. This attractive Jaguar XJ 6, fitted with a 4.2-litre six-cylinder engine producing 181 hp and an automatic gearbox, was originally delivered in Switzerland and handed over to its first owner on 22 February 1985 by Arthur Heuberger AG in St Gallen. For the then considerable sum of CHF 64'000, the owner acquired this elegant saloon with leather upholstery, burl wood inlays, power steering, air conditioning, an electric sunroof and electric windows. As the service booklet suggests, the first owner remained loyal to his distinguished British car until at least 1992, covering some 104'000 km. There were then probably several changes of ownership before the XJ ended up, presumably from 2012 onwards, with an enthusiast who sold it to the current owner in February 2026. The current owner had a major service carried out less than 600 km ago, only to realize that he would have to part with his Jaguar again due to a lack of space. With 188'100 km on the clock, the XJ 6 is in good overall condition with normal signs of wear and tear. The last MOT was carried out in February 2026, meaning this timeless British car can be registered immediately.
