After the Model T, the Model A was developed with a range of body styles to meet the needs of families, farmers, and city dwellers. After the war, the plentiful bounty of left-over low-cost pre-war Fords allowed young people a chance to individualize and modify these cars at nominal cost, forming the genesis of the American Hot Rod. Over the years, hot rodding has continued to attract new generations of enthusiasts to the free-spirit, open air driving, and unique lifestyle surrounding the hot rod community.History and Build Details of This CarThis 1928 Ford Hot Rod was the subject of a thoughtful build commissioned by the owner in the late 1990s. The project began in 1999 with a largely complete original donor car. The owner removed the body, selected new steel bodywork and the latest in hot rod components for the build. New steel roadster doors were purchased from Brookville, while new steel front and rear fenders, steel rumble seat lid and hinge set, new bumpers, and a rear roll pan were purchased from Snyder’s Antique Auto Parts. In addition to the extensive metal work, a new Total Cost Involved Engineering 1018B frame (number A5993) was purchased and prepared as the basis for the build. A 350 V8 crate motor and Turbo Hydro 350 automatic transmission were installed including new suspension, solid rear axle, dual exhaust and four-wheel ventilated power assisted disc brakes. Numerous accessory parts were also purchased and fitted, a set of Autometer gauges were purchased from Roy Brizio, correct Ford emblems were selected, and by 2001, a Stayfast canvas top with headliner was installed along with the new bench seat interior, door panel trim, rumble seat upholstery, and carpet. Other accessories include a 30 Steel Tilt steering column from Ididit, custom dual exhaust, solid rear axle with coil over suspension and rear suspension arms, wire wheels, and chrome plated bumpers. The owner/builder completed the car in 2001 and sold it to the current owner in 2002.Condition OverviewToday this 1928 Ford Hot Rod is ready for the next hot rod enthusiast. The exterior finish is glossy and smooth, and the various vintage trim and detailed features are in excellent condition. The doors, hood, and rumble open and shut with excellent closure, good panel gaps, and generally good fit to the hood panels. The overall body work has been very well done in unforgiving black with great position and stance on the wide wire wheels. The dropped front and rear bumpers are excellent perimeter accents to the wide stance. The 1928 chrome plated grille is flanked by two large headlights perched on a chrome crossbar. The gently raked windscreen is tall enough to protect passengers from wind, while the thin chrome perimeter gives the car a low appearance. The fenders are dropped and raked over big and little front and rear chrome plated wire wheels wearing Goodyear Eagle 185/60 R15 front and 235/70R15 rear radial tires. From any view, the body lines are very well executed giving this roadster a unique appearance seldom seen in late 1920s era hot rods including excellent finishes, thoughtful component choices, and understated details. The interior features a pleated front bench seat which spans the length of the cabin offering ample space for two passengers, comfortable driving position, map pocketed inner door panels, matching black seat belts, and easily accessed controls. The black finished steel dashboard features vintage Autometer gauges nestled into a traditional central cluster instrument panel, while larger diameter Autometer tachometer and speedometer are mounted on the left side of the drop-down billet anchored Ididit tilt-wheel steering column, fronted by a black rim banjo steering wheel. A floor shift selector activates PRND21 selection for the TH-350 automatic transmission. When folded down, the convertible top rests above the rear deck and can be easily raised and lowered manually, latching at the top portion of the chrome plated windshield trim. The rumble seat is easily opened and offers seating for two. An Optima battery is located inside the rumble seat compartment. The engine is accessed via traditional metal louvered side panels which hinge upward on a central hood rod connecting the cowl and radiator. The 350 cu. in. V8 engine is nicely trimmed with polished aluminum valve covers, polished Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold, coated exhaust manifolds, and other polished or chrome plated engine details. A Holley carburetor is topped by a chrome air cleaner, Mallory ignition and MSD wires, and a set of engine gauges are installed as well to monitor standing engine temperature and oil pressure. Clearly the build quality is of a high level and was performed by experienced hot rod builders who utilized proven suspension, and a durable crate-motor based powertrain to build this 28 Ford Hot Rod as a street and show example. The underside of the car is in excellent condition showing no signs of damage or neglect since completed. The chassis features dual exhaust, four-wheel ventilated disc brakes with under floor power brake booster, chrome plated solid front axle with transverse leaf spring and shocks, chrome plated suspension and steering rods, braided stainless steel fuel lines,This 1928 Ford Hot Rod rumble seat roadster offers great build details, fantastic drivetrain, and wide, raked stance. The finish and build quality make it ideal for cruising and showing at any hot rod or custom car event.Items Included with the CarThis car is accompanied by invoices and build notes from the builder/owner and selected digital images documenting portions of the build, metal work, and assembly.
