Description

Estimated Price: £40,000 - £50,000

The Escort RS Cosworth was launched in 1992 as an 'homologation special' where its sole purpose was to incorporate parts that Ford planned to use in their rally cars to ensure success in International Rallying. The first 2,500 cars, the homologation special examples, were built up to May 1994 and notoriously suffered from turbo-lag, but the next 4,500 were improved, largely thanks to their smaller Garrett T25 Turbo.

Two models were available, the Club-spec standard car and the all singing, all dancing Lux version. Power was increased by over 10% from the Sierra RS Cosworth, now making 227bhp, with performance unsurprisingly improved. In 1995, the RS Cosworth was treated to a mild facelift, receiving a new honeycomb grille, restyled bumpers, a more attractive fascia, and revised alloy wheels. Manufacture continued until early 1996 when emissions regulations forced it out of production. Like pretty much every RS Ford, it was a classic from the moment it arrived on the market.

Finished in Diamond White, this particular Escort Cosworth was supplied new into Japan from day one, the first keeper holding on to the car until 2016 when the car's second owner added it to his private collection. Although he covered less than 1,000 miles in the RS over his nine years ownership, he maintained it and had a cam belt service carried out prior to it being shipped to the UK in early 2025.At this point the car had covered just 21,900 miles from new.

Long established and well respected, Tremona Garage have become the "go-to" people when it comes to performance Fords from this era, so it was no surprise that the RS was collected directly from Southampton docs and taken straight to Tremona for a full assessment.

Things started well when it was noted that the car was still fitted with its original factory exhaust with many original stickers on certain components echoing its originality. A compression test indicated that the results were exactly as expected with the indicated mileage. They then went right through the car starting with the coolant system being addressed, a new cam belt with tensioner was fitted, replacement alternator with A/C drivebelts, a complete refresh of the braking system and new gearbox oil along with both axles having oil changes. The clutch appeared to be in good fettle, however, the cable did need replacing so that was done. The car had a thorough road test and it passed Tremona's , famously high, standards with flying colours. Their comments were as follows, "Looking at the overall condition of the car, the trim, underside, suspension and the compression test we feel that the reading on the odometer is believed to be right". The bill in total from Tremona came to £1,800 and a copy is supplied with the car.

As this RS has no official history as such it was necessary to have a third party like Tremona give their rubber stamp, offering some peace of mind to potential buyers, which it clearly does. Offered on a No Reserve basis, this RS is going to generate huge interest and will offer a superb opportunity to get behind the wheel of one of these iconic "Fast Fords" .The car does have a NOVA Certificate showing that it's tax free and therefore the lucky buyer can register it and be the first UK owner.
