"Launched in 1969 as 'the car you always promised yourself', the Capri was Ford Europe's response to the mighty sales success of the Mustang in America. To garner sales interest, Ford relied heavily on motorsport in the 1970s and soon an RS 2600 Capri was commissioned and built to compete in the European Touring Car championship. However, BMW had bigger ideas and introduced the more powerful 3.0 CSL and stole a march on Ford on the track. In response, Ford Advanced Vehicle Operations got the go ahead, in September 1973, to build 248 Capri RS 3100s to homologate the car for the E.T.C.C. and the motorsport public were treated to some very special racing in the 74/75 season, as both manufacturers showed scant regard for cost, both on and off the track. The Essex 3.0 V6 was over-bored to 3091cc giving 148bhp and fitted as standard to the road car, along with suspension modifications, RS four spoke alloys and a shallow front splitter with an enormous rear wing added to the already comprehensive RS2600 standard specification. The world recession slowed sales of the RS 3100 road car, which was only built in righthand drive for the UK market, and by July of 1974 fifty of the unsold cars were sent to Australia to be sold.
Considered the Holy Grail of 1970’s fast Fords, this truly excellent Ford Capri RS 3100 has been well known to the RS Owner's Club for several decades. Restored from a bare shell upwards in 2000/2001, the fastidious owner put meticulous care into the panel fit and finish. The car has been in the care of the present owner for more than a decade, during which time renowned Ford Capri specialists Tickover of Dartford, Kent, have lavished time and effort into maintaining and making this car very reliable. The car benefits from a reconditioned Borg Warner T5 gearbox for relaxed high-speed cruising, improved carburation and exhausts, electric fan and electric fuel pump, all of which combine to make it a fantastic drive. The car has recently benefitted from a full service, refurbished alloy wheels, a new headlining and under-bonnet detailing, plus a fresh MoT test certificate. It is also sitting on a matched set of recently fitted tyres. The interior is in good original condition and, most unusually, equipped with Ford rear inertia seat belts. The owner states that the car is running and sounding better than ever. The engine is smooth, strong and very lusty, but also very mechanically quiet, the gearbox and clutch are a delight. The steering and ride is as good as any RS 3100 out there and the car attracts a huge amount of interest and affection wherever it goes. The current registration SXF 31 (SeXy Ford 3.1) was put on the car by the current owner but he has kept the former identity WGW 343M, which it is known by in club circles, on the bottom of the plates. The car was supplied new by Willment’s of South London and, of course, proprietor John Willment was famous for racing fast Fords. This was the 22nd RS 3100 built and the sixth to be painted Sebring Red, surely the definitive RS 3100 colour, with black interior. This car is supplied with a V5C registration document, MoT test certificate and a file containing a large history and copies of the old registration documents. We understand that there are only about fifty RS 3100s left and if you are keen to own one, then we feel you might struggle to find a better example than this. This car is simply made to drive fast and enjoy but equally just to look at and admire. It is without doubt a classic 1970’s machine."
