Some cars are put together so well that you start wondering why manufacturers do not give their designers complete freedom more often. This Abarth 500 Cabrio Italia is a perfect example. Azzurro Italia, an interior with beige-brown Sabelt bucket seats, beautiful details, and exactly the right amount of Italian bravado. We are actually a little bit in love with it. And so far, we are only talking about the looks.
This is number 107 of just 150 examples built. And frankly, we think it is better specified than many an Italian sports car with a very different price tag. Are we allowed to say that?
The Abarth 500 Cabrio Italia was presented in 2011 at the IAA in Frankfurt to mark 150 years of Italian unification. Abarth decided to celebrate that special anniversary with a limited-edition version of the 500C. Not a regular model with a few extra badges, but a carefully curated sporting convertible with its own color scheme, exclusive interior details, and a healthy dose of Abarth engineering.
The car was finished in the distinctive Azzurro Italia, also known as Blu Abu Dhabi. A beautiful blue shade that changes character depending on the light. Combined with the magnesium-colored 17-inch alloy wheels, the special Cabrio Italia details, and the yellow Brembo brake calipers, it makes for a particularly successful package. But perhaps the best part reveals itself when you open the door.
The Abarth Corsa bucket seats by Sabelt are upholstered in a beautiful beige-brown combination and fitted with carbon-fiber backrests. They are not only exceptionally attractive to look at, but were also developed with a clear sporting purpose. They are lightweight, offer excellent lateral support, and give the interior the atmosphere of a far more exclusive sports car. Combined with the blue bodywork, the color combination is simply fantastic.
Under the hood is the familiar 1.4-liter Turbo T-Jet four-cylinder, producing 160 horsepower. In Sport mode, the engine delivers up to 230 Nm of torque, making this compact Abarth feel remarkably lively. The sprint to 100 km/h takes approximately 7.4 seconds, while top speed is 211 km/h.
The Sport button adjusts, among other things, turbo boost pressure, engine response, and steering assistance. In addition, the Cabrio Italia features high-quality Brembo brakes and Abarth’s familiar TTC technology, which helps transfer the power effectively to the road.
But for us, an important part of the enjoyment lies in the manual transmission. The gearbox is a pleasure to use and gives this Abarth a direct, almost old-school sporting character. You choose the gear yourself, hear the turbocharged engine respond, and feel that you are genuinely driving the car. We also happen to love classic cars very much. They are an important part of our work. And perhaps that is why we appreciate qualities like these even more.
With the electrically operated fabric roof open, the driving experience only becomes more enjoyable. The Abarth is easy to drive through the city, but it really comes alive on a winding road. Compact dimensions, a lively engine, excellent seats, and a wonderfully sporty soundtrack. This is exactly the kind of car that makes you voluntarily take the long way around on a sunny morning.
This example is also in particularly beautiful condition. The body still wears its original paint throughout, and the car has been carefully maintained. The mileage is just 60,000 kilometers, which fits perfectly with the fresh and well-cared-for impression this Abarth gives. The interior has also been preserved beautifully, with the special Sabelt seats as the absolute highlight. And then there are the accessories.
This Cabrio Italia comes with the special leather Tramontano bag and the matching Azzurro sunglasses. Of course they belong with it. An Italian anniversary edition without stylish luggage and a pair of sunglasses would really have been a missed opportunity. The nice thing is that these special accessories are still with the car, together with the original books.
And let’s be honest: in our view, the combination of Azzurro Italia, the beige-brown interior, and all those specific details is even more stylish than the Ferrari Dealer Edition. Less predictable, exceptionally tasteful, and with an identity all its own that suits the character of Abarth perfectly.
A small Italian sports car with an exceptionally strong sense of style. We are in love with this Abarth. Interested? Contact Gallery Aaldering today and discover this special Abarth for yourself.
