Description

Early exotic supercar with modern conveniences

The BB 512i represents a milestone. BB models were the first production models to be powered by a rear mounted 12 cylinder and the last to be bodied by the legendary Sergio Scaglietti. The “i” model represents the final iteration of Berlinetta Boxer series and is acknowledged to be the most tractable. With incredibly low mileage recorded, a better example of a Ferrari with appreciation potential and the power and ability to amaze may be impossible to find.

This Car’s Past

An extensive folder of records has been kept with this wonderful Boxer. They document the November 1980 order and include the original bill of sale, original very hard to find Quartz clock tag and a significant amount of correspondence from Ferrari SPA and the first owner. The bill of landing from Flying Tigers and original pallet tag chronicling the original delivery via air transportation add a great touch to this car's wonderfully documented history. Much attention was paid to federalization as Ferrari did not prepare the BB512’s for the US market. The original owner/ importer was able to avoid an unsightly bumper modification and regulation sidelights were attractively placed. Records suggest that this was in fact just the fifth injected Boxer to leave the Ferrari Factory and that it was kept in the importer’s family until 2003. The present owner, took possession of this amazing time capsule with approximately 865 miles on the odometer and has well documented history of his stewardship. He has chosen to add a Larini Stage II exhaust, known for its performance enhancement but favored by the owner for its sound. The original exhaust accompanies the car. As an early production example of the BB 512i, one unique feature is the factory placement of a single powered side view mirror; they were paired on later cars. Today, this Berlminetta Boxer displays just 2,605 kilometers (approx 1600 miles).

History of The Model

The Dino’s success was not lost on Ferrari and mid engine “8’s” and “twelves” soon followed the 6 cylinder model. Bringing twelve cylinders to the rear of the Ferrari required a low profile powerplant. Ferrari had developed a flat-12 for the 1970 F1 season. It powered the 312 B which Jackie Ickx drove to three wins and second place in the drivers championship and provided inspiration and a framework for a production model. The prototype 365 GTB4 Berlinetta Boxer debuted at the 1971 Turin Auto show and a customer model soon followed. In 1976, subtle changes in styling, an increase in displacement and compression, and a dry sump system accompanied the re-badging of the car as the BB 512. In 1981, a Bosch K Jetronic fuel injection was introduced. Torque was increased and the “i” model represented a welcome improvement in overall driveability.

Preservation History

This Berlinetta Boxer has been the prized possession of an experienced Chicago collector for the past 9 years. He notes that the bonnet paint was freshened as it was prone to fade as were the flat black lower panels. The remainder of the paint is said to be original. Age not wear prompted an engine out cam belt service at 1060 miles in March 2000. The owner prides himself on a maintenance program which includes driving the car every 60 to 90 days to keep seals and mechanicals fresh. He states the engine runs smoothly and the demeanor of the car is as new. Handling is tight, gauges function, and the air conditioning blows cool. When not in use, the Ferrari remains in climatized storage.

Market Trend

The past half-decade has seen an unprecedented rise in the value of Italian sports cars. BB 512 and BB 512i auction prices have increased by 200%. At 929 and 1007 units produced respectively, there is no difference in rarity. Some prefer the carbureted models for their throaty sound and exotic nature. Others prefer the fuel injected model for its ease-of-use and lower cost of tuning. The price escalation of both models has been remarkably similar and seems not to have plateaued. This was the last production run under the stewardship of famed builder, Scaglietti, and the bodies were completely hand-built. This pedigree of historically important coachwork, a powerplant with a true connection to 10 years of Ferrari international competition success, a manual shift now that there are none produced by the marque, and a platform civil enough for daily use should keep the Berlinetta Boxer in the ranks of the most valuable modern production Ferraris.

Summary

With exotic styling and flat 12 power, the BB 512i represents all the mystique and performance of Ferrari in a presentation that embraces driver convenience and comfort.
