Description

Chassis No. 5301GT

Presented at the 1962 Paris Motor Show as the most luxurious of Ferrari's 250 Series and with clearly evident genetics from its 250 GTO roots, the Lusso was well-received and went swiftly into production. Sheathed in a proper Grand Touring body penned by Turinese coachbuilder Pininfarina and manufactured by Carrozzeria Scaglietti, the Lusso would become the swan song of the 3.0-liter Colombo V12.

To justify the title, the Lusso boasted a larger interior with robust creature comforts. Its tubular chassis, considered a short wheel base at 94 inches, was the same as the legendary 250 GT Berlinetta. Underpinned by a double-wishbone suspension with coil springs at the front and hydraulic disc brakes at all four corners, delivering prodigious stopping power. This was necessary as the V12 power plant, only slightly detuned from competition spec and with triple Weber carburetors, offered 250 horsepower at a raucous 7,000 rpm.

Manufactured from 1962 to 1964, only 351 examples reached the road, further cementing the Lusso as not just a special road-going Ferrari but one with rarity in its story - a story that sees the end of the legendary 250 designation, making way for the 275 GTB.

Chassis 5301GT

Believed to be manufactured near the end of Lusso production, chassis number 5301GT was delivered new to Joao Gaspar of Portugal in 1964, wearing its original color of Verde Pino. It then spent the next 40 years in Europe, eventually finding its way to Martin Chisholm in England, owner and founder of The Classic Motor Hub. At some point in its history, the car was given a new unmarked Tipo 168 engine. It was also stripped down and given a full color change to the Blue Pozzi finish that it wears today. The engine was re-stamped 5301GT, and then in 2007, Mr. Chisholm sold and exported the car to Family Classic Cars, LLC, of San Juan Capistrano, California.

Later that same year, 5301GT was acquired by its current caretaker, a Ferrari collector based in Houston, Texas, providing him with over 15 years of driving enjoyment. In 2016, this 250 GT was brought to Ferrari of Houston for a full engine rebuild for which receipts are available. Of special note is that Ferrari of Houston subcontracted the highly specialized cylinder head work to the legendary New Zealander Bob Wallace. Bob Wallace was the Lamborghini factory test driver between 1963 - 1975 and played a critical role in developing some of that brand's earliest sports cars. This car has received other minor services and repairs over the years and a cosmetic refresh of the entire body's Blue Pozzi paint in July 2022. 5301GT has been driven quite regularly by its current caretaker, enjoying many spirited miles and it is not unusual over the past 15 years to see this beautiful Ferrari GT traversing the busy Houston highway system.

Evergreen 25

The seller of this Lusso has committed a portion of their proceeds to support Evergreen 25, a not-for-profit 501©(3) organization focused on mental health programs, in particular suicide prevention. The rates of young people choosing this path has continued to increase, and it is the purpose of Evergreen 25 to help not-for-profit entities that are already established with formal programs in suicide prevention.

This particular Lusso represents a unique opportunity to not only support a critical charity mission, it also offers the new caretaker a legendary road-going Ferrari. One of just 351 examples, this rare 1960s Ferrari Gran Turismo has been thoroughly enjoyed by the seller and it stands ready to offer its new caretaker the special pride of vintage Ferrari ownership.
