Dino Compendium: 206 GT, 246 GT, 246 GTS, by Matthias Bartz

The 246 GT presented here is a truly unique example of the most evolved Dino series, the Tipo E. Between 1971 and 1974, Ferrari built 3,061 examples of the final E-series Dino, of which a mere 331 were 246 GTs built for the US market.

According to the research of model authority Matthias Bartz, author of the definitive book Dino Compendium: 206 GT, 246 GT, 246 GTS, this 246 GT, chassis 05020, was completed in April 1973. It was originally finished in Rosso Cordoba Metallizzato (Cordoba Red Metallic), a particularly attractive dark red shade specified on just 51 Dinos of all types. As was the case with most US-delivered 246 GTs, this car was generously equipped with optional Borletti air-conditioning, leather upholstery, Cromodora wheels, and electric windows. Originally retailed through Ferrari dealer Griswold & Co. of Berkeley, California, on September 10, 1973, the Dino’s first private owner was Steven Giacobbi of Sun Valley, Idaho. Remarkably, the Ferrari remained in his care until 1986, when ownership transferred to Timothy Murphy of Norwalk, Connecticut. During his ownership, Mr. Murphy drove the Dino from California to New York, a journey that he memorialized in an article for Prancing Horse, the Ferrari Club of America’s official magazine.

In late 1989, Mr. Murphy sold 05020 and it spent the next four years in the care of Florida-based Ferrari dealer Tom Shelton. In August 1994, Lars Malmberg of Hermosa Beach, California, acquired the 246 GT and carefully maintained it for nearly two decades before relocating to Sweden in 2013. At that point, the Ferrari was sold and shipped to Bruce Canepa’s workshop in Scotts Valley, California, where it was meticulously detailed to concours standards, including color sanding.

Since maintained in the collection of a Southern California collector, this rare US-spec Dino GT presents in outstanding, largely unrestored condition, with the exception of a high-quality repaint in the original factory color and new interior carpets. The odometer displayed just 35,053 at the time of cataloguing. An additional testament to its sparing use is its well-preserved condition, including its beautifully preserved original Sabbia (Sand) leather upholstery, which possesses a wonderful, inviting patina. Included with the sale of this exceptional Dino are a proper tool roll, jack kit, and leather handbook folio that contains the appropriate manuals and factory literature.

Boasting an exceptional well-documented provenance, distinctive color scheme, and limited mileage, as well as desirable options and accessories, this late-production Tipo E 246 GT is among the finest and most original examples to be found anywhere.
