Description
Delahaye 135 MS Cabriolet Saoutchik 1950 – Ex. Albert Prost – Extraordinary History – Superb Condition
The Delahaye 135 was unveiled at the 1934 Paris Motor Show: derived from the 138, it features a lower and more streamlined design which, combined with its mechanical harmony and balanced handling, made it a real success. Well powered with a 3.5-litre engine, its career was a triumph, making it one of the best-selling pre-war cars in its market segment.
The greatest French coachbuilders used it to create true works of art on wheels, and the car also proved its reliability and performance through numerous period sporting victories (Monte Carlo Rally win, ACF Grand Prix win, etc.).
The MS version (“modifiée spéciale”) with a 3.5-litre engine and three carburettors is the most powerful in the touring range, with production continuing into the 1950s.
This Delahaye 135MS Cabriolet chassis was purchased new from Garage Royal in Paris by the famous collector and aviator Albert Prost, who had it bodied by Saoutchik to his personal specifications (special order). Five years later, on June 1st, 1955, he sold the car to a garage named Le Marais.
Albert Prost found his car again in the early 1980s and decided to buy it back! He then had it fully restored. The file accompanying the car includes several interesting documents: the original Delahaye Roanne dealership brochure and pricing, several photos of the car in the 1950s with Mrs. Prost, a photo after Albert Prost found it prior to restoration, and a few other period pictures.
This Delahaye is one of a kind: its flowing design perfectly reflects Saoutchik’s style of the time, with its enveloping front fenders extending to the streamlined rear, without being weighed down by chrome. Its burgundy color enhances the beltline and highlights the elegance of the shape. Inside, the cognac leather upholstery is very well preserved with a lovely patina. The large four-spoke steering wheel stands before the sporty dashboard typical of the Delahaye 135, here complemented by a period Commodor radio. The rear trunk holds the original pair of fitted suitcases, perfectly shaped to match the compartment.
The current owner bought it from the Prost family and has carefully maintained this exceptional car. Recently serviced for sale, the car runs very well and will not require any immediate expenses for its next owner.
