Myron Scott, the assistant director of the PR department at General Motors, was given the go-ahead in 1953 for the design of a new Chevrolet sports car, the Corvette. The name Corvette was derived from the small agile American Navy warship of the same name symbolising freedom and adventure.

During that year’s Motorama the concept was first introduced to the public and by late 1953 the first examples of the legend were born. Up to the current day Chevrolet has designed and built eight different versions of “The American Sportscar”.

Our car is a late series one (type C1 of which 69,015 were produced). Built-in St Lewis it received its first registration in February 1962 in America. For the last few years, the car has resided in Holland on Dutch papers.

Other than a very neat respray and a new black vinyl hood this car still appears to be very authentic. That authenticity is especially noticeable inside where in matching tones it has developed a fine patina. The brightwork is also very neat as well as having a very tidy chassis without any sign of rust, superficial or otherwise. The latter is a rare thing.

The 300 Hp 8-cylinder (RD-code), naturally V-shaped, is the original matching numbers unit and runs a treat. It transfers its power to the rear axle via a 4-speed manual gearbox. There is no lack of power or sound, which in part due to the light polyester bodywork is responsible for launching the C1 out of the blocks. Although we are not able to confirm, you could be forgiven for believing the 9,349 miles on the clock is accurate as it fits perfectly with the car’s overall demeanour.
