Description
OVERVIEW
The E39 M5 doesn’t need much help, as BMW got the basic recipe remarkably right: a potent, naturally aspirated V8, six-speed manual transmission, rear-wheel drive, and a chassis that manages to be genuinely sporting while remaining comfortable enough to use every day.
Under the hood is BMW’s celebrated S62, a 4.9-liter naturally aspirated V8 rated at 394 horsepower when new. Individual throttle bodies, double VANOS variable valve timing, and an eagerness to rev give the S62 a character quite different from the turbocharged engines that would eventually replace it. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox, the only transmission BMW offered in the E39 M5.
This 2002 M5 builds on this winning formula with a carefully chosen group of upgrades, including a JB Racing aluminum flywheel, South Bend Stage 3 Daily clutch, Supersprint mufflers, and KW coil-overs, and an E60 M5 short shifter. The aluminum flywheel reduces rotating mass, allowing the V8 to respond more quickly to throttle inputs and making rev-matched downshifts particularly satisfying. It is paired with a Stage 3 Daily clutch, chosen to provide greater capacity while retaining manners appropriate for a street-driven car. At the other end, a pair of Supersprint mufflers lets more of the S62’s V8 soundtrack through without fundamentally changing the character of the car.
The suspension has received similar attention. KW coil-overs provide more precise body control and an adjustable stance while, according to receipts on file, the suspension itself has been rebuilt over time using OEM components. It’s an approach we like – sharpen the areas where modern components can make a meaningful difference while maintaining the engineering and feel that made the E39 such a good car in the first place.
This M5 currently shows approximately 86,500 miles. Its CARFAX reports three owners, with the original owner keeping the car for approximately 16 years and the second owner for more than seven. No accidents or damage are listed, and the only bodywork known is the repainting of the bumpers and hood due to rock chips.
The history file documents servicing throughout its life, including brake pads and rotors at 63,661 miles, BMW dealer maintenance, and an alignment at 79,442 miles. A pre-purchase inspection was performed by Midnight Motorsport in Seattle at 84,914 miles, followed by additional service through April 2026, when the odometer showed 86,074 miles.
The M5’s overall condition remains extremely presentable, a testament to the quality of this generation of 5-series and the care of this example’s three owners. The interior has been fitted with replacement grey-wood toned trim (originals in the box) and the leather remains supple and soft to the touch. All panels fit well and the doors close with their signature, reassuring thump.
More than two decades after it was built, the E39 M5 still feels like a remarkably complete performance car. This example’s modest, well-considered upgrades simply turn up the volume on the M5’s most important attributes: throttle response, chassis control, V8 sound, and the involvement of a proper manual gearbox.
