Description

About this Collectable

The BMW E34 M5 Touring: the first power station and one of the most exclusive models in BMW history. This is the later version with the six-speed manual and various other upgrades. Only 209 of these were built, which makes this a proper unicorn.

A car with the performance of a sports car and the practicality of a station wagon: a brilliant concept. The first performance station wagons arrived in the 90s and it is still a popular type of car today. What not everybody realises, however: it was not Audi, but BMW that came first with a performance station wagon.

This happened in 1992 when BMW launched a Touring version of the E34 M5. This was before the RS2 and 850 T-5R appeared, making it a unique car at the time. A Touring from BMW M is still something special, since the M5 E61 Touring is the only other station wagon from BMW M.

Whereas the E34 M5 sedan first had a 3.6 engine, the Touring immediately got the new 3.8 block from the facelift version. This straight-six produces 340 hp and 400 Nm of torque. This made the M5 Touring the fastest station wagon on the market at the time of the introduction. 0 to 100 km/h in 5,9 seconds is still impressive for today's standards, especially for a stationwagon.

This M5 Touring is from 1994. These later versions are equipped with a six-speed manual transmission (rather than a five-speed gearbox), upgraded brakes, the Adaptive M Suspension and 18-inch wheels. You can also recognize this version by the kidneys, which are wider.

Nevertheless, this is just a practical car that can be used every day (it even comes with a detachable towbar). The previous 3 owners have used the car for its intended purpose and covered a total182.600 km with it.

Only 891 of the E34 M5 Touring were built, making this one of the rarest M models. The six-speed version is even more rare: only 209 were built. This is truly a special piece of BMW history.

Our opinion

Did we already write about the RS6 that it's a wolf in sheep's clothing, this M5 touring is an even more understated Collectable. We had to consult Google, but yes, virtually no M logos were fitted from the factory. Unfortunately, we have not (yet) driven this M ourselves, but it must be very entertaining to give many modern cars a run for their money.

In any case, we are fans of the BMW models from these years. Solid as a safe, deliccate feeling through all the controls and this E34 has the unsurpassed 3.8 six-in-line. A family party on wheels. Will the next owner dare to drive it daily?
