Description

Paul Russell and Company is proud to offer what we would describe as the best BMW 507 available. This opportunity provides the new owner to “Jump the Line” on an absolutely fresh Paul Russell and Company restoration. We feel it would be a great addition for any collector who is looking for the Best of the Best while providing years of enjoyment, whether on the road or show field.

The BMW 507 began as an idea from the influential U.S. importer Max Hoffman for a roadster to compete in the lucrative American market against the Mercedes-Benz 300SL. Hoffman encouraged his friend, and noted industrial designer Albrect Goertz, to bid on the project. Goertz’s inspired design was approved by BMW and is now considered one of the most beautiful cars ever created. Largely hand built, it featured an aluminum body on a tubular steel ladder frame. Power came from an aluminum 3.2- liter V8 matched to a 4-speed manual transmission. Due to the high-level production costs of building the 507, BMW lost money on each example built. Nonetheless, it is perhaps the most significant model in the BMW portfolio having spawned a design language that would help return the company to profitability and that can be seen in every BMW roadster that followed.

This 1958 BMW 507 Series II Roadster, chassis number 70126 was delivered new to Autohaus Wilhelm Glöckler in Frankfurt, Germany on March 19, 1958. It is one of 252 BMW 507s and one of only 18 cars delivered in its original color combination of papyrus (eggshell) over blue leather. The known ownership history includes Norman Wolgin of Pennsylvania (1975), Bruce Poor of Massachusetts (1984), Charles LeMaitre of Massachusetts (late ’80s), and Ervin Lyon of New Hampshire (1994). During Ervin Lyon’s ownership the car would participate in the Tour de France and be continually serviced by Paul Russell and Company.

In 2017, the car was purchased by its current owner who commissioned Paul Russell and Company to complete a three-year, total restoration of the car. Every nut and bolt would be addressed during this extensive “Top to Bottom” restoration. The entire drivetrain would be rebuilt with new parts where deemed necessary and extensively tested for proper road-going use. 70126 would go on to place 3rd in the competitive European Grand Touring Class at the 2021 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Since then, it has benefited from additional tuning and sorting miles by our team of specialists to ensure proper function and reliability. This magnificent BMW is now ready for a new owner to drive, rally, show and display. It is a truly turn-key opportunity to own a fully-vetted 507 without the multi-year wait usually required for a world-class restoration. Additional photos and information can be provided. This BMW 507 can be seen by Appointment Only in our Private Showroom in Essex, MA.
