  • Supplied with rear-mounted spare wheel, toolbox, wheel spinner mallet, and jack
  • Eligible for prestigious concours and competition events

BMW could hardly have wished for a better competitive debut for its 328 Roadster. In the June 1936 edition of the Eifelrennen at the Nürburgring, Works motorcycle racer Ernst Henne powered to victory in the 2.0-litre class. Off the back of the immediate success, national motorsport grids soon became heavily populated with the new sports car.

This example, chassis number 85367, is recorded in the handwritten BMW 328 build log as having been finished in White and produced in April 1939. Thought to have been delivered new to Bucharest, the capital city of Romania, it was first registered for road use in July.

Although a full history for the car is not presently known, a previous title document shows that, from at least 1998, it resided as part of the highly respected Aumann Collection. Purchased by the consigning owner, who holds a similarly deep-rooted passion for pre- and postwar German sports cars, the 328 Roadster was submitted for a total restoration.

A correct-type, replacement straight-six block (restamped to match this car’s chassis number) was built up through to June 2021 by engine specialist Michael Plass Motoreninstandsetzung in Plauen at a cost of €9,235. The powertrain is paired with a Volvo-sourced gearbox. Meanwhile, between November 2020 and November 2021, Mario Schrank of Die Oldtimermanufaktur in Kaltennordheim-Fischbach embarked on a bare-metal rebuild. The car was completely stripped in preparation for the fitment of a replacement body taken from another 328 Roadster. The rear section and wings were fabricated, the exterior and interior repainted, the drivetrain reinstalled, and five new tyres supplied. Across no fewer than 1,716 hours, the BMW was brought up to its present stunning condition in work totalling an impressive €135,197.

Beautifully presented with burgundy hide and a black convertible roof—further to being offered with its rear-mounted spare wheel, toolbox, wheel spinner mallet, and jack—this 328 Roadster would make for a splendid entry into prestigious competition and concours events.
