The BMW 3 Series was the direct successor to the iconic 02 range and marked the beginning of a new standard in the segment of compact premium sports saloons.

The BMW 320 E21 from 1979 represents the pure essence of the brand in the 1970s: rear-wheel drive, perfect weight distribution and a driver-focused cockpit. In an era when the driving experience was not yet filtered through electronic aids, the 320 offered a mechanical, honest way of getting from A to B. The characterful four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with a manual gearbox, turned every journey into a direct dialogue between man and machine.

The E21 was, moreover, the first 3 Series with the now iconic driver-oriented dashboard, a design philosophy to which BMW has remained faithful to this very day. This made the 3 Series not just a sales success, but also a blueprint for generations of sporting saloons.
