There are cars you buy. And there are cars you acquire. The Bentley Continental R belongs unmistakably to that second category. This is not a means of transport, this is a statement. A statement that says: I have made it, I no longer need to prove anything to anyone, and I drive wherever I please at a pace I set myself.

The Continental R appeared in 1991 as the first Bentley in decades that was not simply a Rolls-Royce with a different grille. Crewe had finally grasped that the marque needed more than badge engineering. The result was a Grand Tourer of 2.4 tonnes that looked as though a Savile Row tailor had designed a coupé. That distinctive shoulder line, that roofline sloping subtly towards the rear, that monumental C-pillar. This was British understatement in coachwork form. No shouting, no spoilers, no vulgar exhausts. Simply a small fortune's worth of self-assurance on four wheels.

Beneath that endless bonnet lies the 6.75 litre V8. Yes, 6750 cc. Nearly seven litres. An engine with roots in the 1950s, developed ever since into a monument to torque. 320 bhp sounds modest by today's standards, but the point is the way that power is delivered. No shrieking, no drama. Simply an inexhaustible wave of propulsion, accompanied by a discreet murmur suggesting there is a great deal more held in reserve. The four-speed automatic does precisely what it should: shifting imperceptibly while you concentrate on more important matters. Lighting a cigar, for instance. Or deciding which country estate you shall be visiting this weekend.

Anyway, back to the specimen gleaming before us. This Continental R dates from February 1993, which makes it an early production example. The combination of black exterior with light grey Connolly leather is exactly as it should be: timeless, elegant, and utterly immune to passing fashion. Those light grey pipings on the seats are the sort of detail that keeps Bentley owners awake at night. In the positive sense, needless to say.

The documentation tells the story of a car that has lived but has not been abused. First presumably in the United Kingdom, then Belgium from 2010, and now the Netherlands. The Belgians kept the Car-Pass neatly up to date, which is always reassuring. Recently a great deal has been invested at Stoffels Classic Cars in Heinkenszand: new rear dampers, all brake hoses replaced, brake accumulators and suspension accumulators renewed, a new battery, and a new alarm including remote controls. That is not maintenance, that is a spa treatment.

The specification reads like a wish list from 1993. Automatic rear level control, variable damping, dual-zone climate control that distinguishes between upper and lower (only Bentley would think of such a thing), electric seats with memory, and a Rolls-Royce mobile car telephone. The telephone no longer works, of course, but the fact that it is still fitted makes everything worthwhile. It is the automotive equivalent of a vintage Rolex: you do not wear it to tell the time.

Those 16-inch alloy wheels with Continental tyres are exactly what the factory specified. No aftermarket experiments, no mock-sporting modifications. This is a car that is precisely as it was intended: a land yacht for people who regard haste as a character flaw.

The original Bentley document folder is still present, including the 1992 Owner's Handbook and the service booklet. It is those details that transform a car from an object into an heirloom.

Who buys such a thing? Someone who understands that an S-Class is for employees and a Continental R is for owners. Someone in no hurry, except when a good table is concerned. Someone who knows that true luxury does not shout, it whispers. And whisper this Bentley does like no other.

Two and a half tonnes of British grandeur, and yet more elegant than anything rolling off the line today.
