Origins of the Mini Van

Originally introduced by Austin in 1960, the Mini Van was based on the same platform as the Mini launched a year earlier, but with a longer wheelbase and taller bodywork to increase cargo space. These early models were designed as light commercial vehicles for small tradespeople and craftsmen.

In the 1980s, the Mini Van was still a popular utility vehicle, particularly with the Royal Mail who took advantage of its versatility. Indeed, its manoeuvrability and small size made it ideal for urban mail delivery, allowing it to navigate traffic and park easily. Furthermore, its ability to carry equipment made the work of Royal Mail technicians easier, making it a versatile and efficient tool.

Completely restored in 2016 from the bare body down to the smallest screw, this Mini Van is ready to hit the road. This meticulous restoration has brought this classic back to life, while also providing some notable improvements.

Under the hood, the original 1000cc engine has been replaced by a 1275cc unit, from a Mini Cooper, now developing 65hp. This modification offers much better driving pleasure and a very pleasant ride. The gearbox has also been completely restored to adapt to this new engine.

The interior has not been left out. The black sky upholstery is new, offering optimal comfort with a period look. At the rear, custom-made wooden storage has been fitted, adding a touch of practicality, ideal for a craftsman or an individual wishing to use this utility vehicle on a daily basis.

Origines de la Mini Van

Introduite à l’origine par Austin en 1960, la Mini Van était basée sur la même plateforme que la Mini lancée un an plus tôt, mais avec un empattement allongé et une carrosserie plus haute pour augmenter l’espace de chargement. Ces premiers modèles étaient conçus comme des véhicules utilitaires légers, pour les petits commerçants et les artisans.

Dans les années 1980, la Mini Van était toujours un véhicule utilitaire populaire, notamment auprès de la La Royal Mail qui a tiré parti de sa polyvalence. En effet, sa maniabilité et sa petite taille en ont fait un véhicule parfait pour la distribution du courrier en milieu urbain, lui permettant de naviguer aisément dans la circulation et de se garer facilement. Par ailleurs, sa capacité à transporter du matériel a facilité le travail des techniciens de la Royal Mail, faisant de ce modèle un outil polyvalent et efficace.

Un utilitaire attachant et plein de charme !

Intégralement restaurée en 2016 depuis la caisse à nue jusqu’à la moindre vis, cette Mini Van est prête à prendre la route. Cette restauration méticuleuse a permis de redonner vie à ce classique, tout en apportant quelques notables améliorations.

Sous le capot, le moteur d’origine de 1000cc a été remplacé par un bloc 1275cc, issu d’une Mini Cooper, développant désormais 65ch. Cette modification offre un agrément de conduite bien supérieur et une conduite très agréable. La boîte de vitesses a elle aussi été entièrement restaurée pour s’adapter à cette nouvelle motorisation.

L’intérieur n’a pas été en reste. La sellerie en sky noir est neuve, offrant un confort optimal avec un look d’époque. À l’arrière, des rangements en bois sur mesure ont été aménagés, ajoutant une touche de praticité, idéale pour un artisan ou un particulier souhaitant utiliser cet utilitaire au quotidien.
