Description
In 1967, the Aston Martin DBS was launched; through various iterations, it evolved into the V8 Vantage and, alongside the wedge-shaped Lagonda saloon, formed the manufacturer’s entire range at Newport Pagnell by the end of the 1980s. In October 1988, however, a new sports car called the Virage was announced; whilst it did not deny its heritage, it nevertheless looked significantly different from its predecessor. Compared with its predecessor, the design of the Virage – unveiled to the public in Birmingham at the end of 1988 – was noticeably more elongated and featured very few curves. The Aston engineers had also revised the 5.3-litre V8 alloy engine. Instead of two, there were now four valves per cylinder to manage the fuel-air mixture and exhaust gases. According to the manufacturer, the new engine produced 335 hp at 5'300 rpm without a catalytic converter – enough for a top speed of around 250 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in under seven seconds. With a catalytic converter fitted, a few horsepower were lost, but Virage buyers still had no cause to complain about a lack of power. The Virage made a huge splash – just a few weeks after its launch, Aston Martin announced that production had already been fully booked until 1992, even though manufacturing had not yet begun. The convertible version of the range was traditionally designated ‘Volante’. It was unveiled in September 1990 at the Birmingham Motor Show. The Aston Martin Virage Volante offered here was first registered in Germany on 9 June 1996 and handed over to its proud first owner by Auto König in Berlin on 4 July of that year. At the time, the owner had to pay the dealer around CHF 360'000 for this exclusive convertible, featuring a 310 hp 5.3-litre V8 engine, automatic gearbox, air conditioning, electric soft top and the finest leather interior. Probably around 1998, with approximately 10'000 km on the clock, the Aston changed hands to a second owner. He used the car at his holiday home in Marbella and brought it to his residence in Ticino at the end of 2005. In July 2006, the Virage was officially imported and registered in Switzerland. Finally, in July 2010, the elegant convertible was taken over by the actual owner with just under 29'000 km on the clock. The owner enjoyed driving his Aston Martin and covered around 20'000 km in it on sunny days. Naturally, he also ensured it received regular servicing, as the existing receipts show. For example – in addition to the standard servicing – shortly after taking ownership, both ignition distributors were replaced, as were rubber seals damaged by intense sunlight. In 2022, just over 1'000 km ago, the ignition control units were repaired and the fuel injection pressure sensors and top dead center (TDC) sensor were replaced. In July 2026 – around 100 km ago – both catalytic converters were overhauled, with the ceramic inserts being replaced by more robust metal components. In addition, the car was fitted with four new tyres and underwent a service including new spark plugs. With 49'975 km on the clock, this rare Aston Martin Virage Volante – of which only 234 were built between 1992 and 1997 – is in good to very good condition with normal signs of wear and tear. The air conditioning is not working and should be repaired by a specialist. The last MOT took place in July 2026, meaning this elegant British car can be registered immediately.
