In 1965, the DB6 was first shown to the public at the London Motor Show. Looking only at the front end, we see many similarities to its predecessor, the DB5. However, the rear of the DB6 has become completely different. The biggest difference is the slightly elongated rear end, which features a Kamm-style spoiler inspired by Aston Martin’s racing efforts. The DB6 model features aluminum body panels over a superstructure consisting of folded steel box sections, which replaced the full superleggera construction of the DB4 and DB5.

The DB6 was the company’s signature road car of the times with just over 1200 examples produced. Very few of these were delivered from the factory with the desirable Vantage option package which included triple Weber carburetors and a higher compression cylinder head.

In Vantage trim, the 4.0L DOHC straight six is quoted as producing 325 horsepower. The DB6 boasts numerous technical advancements over the DB5, including a 5-speed ZF transmission, slightly longer wheel base for increased stability at high speed, and improved aerodynamics. This example features the 5-speed manual gearbox, instead of the 5-speed ZF automatic transmission.

The DB6 was a powerful and elegant sports touring car, one which remains a timeless blue-chip classic thanks to its blend of all the ingredients that make a classic car quintessentially appealing. Mechanically innovative, rare, attractive, high performance, and with a touch of star quality lent by James Bond’s famous DB5, the DB6 is an ideal all round classic. Exact numbers of Vantage specifications built are unfortunately not available, but the fact is that only a handful of left-hand drive Vantages MkI were built between 1965 and 1969.

ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE

Based on the Heritage certificate provided, this particular DB6 Vantage was manufactured on March 23, 1966. The vehicle was initially bought by Aston Martin Lagonda Inc, USA, who then sold it to its first owner, Frederick H. Gillmore in Oyster Bay, NY. Originally, the car featured a Pacific Blue exterior with a Natural Connolly tan interior.

This Vantage model is a great example of matching numbers, as it still houses its original engine.

Numerous extras can be observed on the option list for this Vantage, including the highly sought-after Vantage engine. The ‘V’ reference on the chassis number is an indication of this feature.

Additionally, other notable options include Normalair air conditioning, chrome wired wheels, a heated rear window, and a Bosch Köln TR radio.

Recently, in 2021, the car underwent a complete respray to Grey Metallic and received a full interior retrim in black leather.

Furthermore, a few modifications were made to enhance the driving experience, such as the inclusion of electric power steering and Bluetooth connectivity for playing music and the airconditioning was completely rebuilt to have it properly working.

CONDITION EXTERIOR

Having been fully resprayed in 2021, the car’s bodywork presents superbly. The paint has a beautiful deep shine and the body is in a wonderful condition with perfect gaps on the bonnet, boot and doors.

All chrome work looks very good on the outside of the car.

All four rims show no damage whatsoever and are in tremendous condition.

CONDITION INTERIOR

The black leather interior shows very well with the grey exterior color.

Smiths instrumentation includes a 180-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and a 5-digit odometer that shows 88k miles.

The parcel shelf and headliner are in very good condition, as is the dashboard including instruments and switches.

Just as the exterior, the interior is very nice.

The Weber carburetors have tremendous eye appeal and the presentation of the engine is absolutely fabulous.

DRIVING EXPERIENCE

In regards to the driving experience of this vehicle, there’s not much to say. The car is incredibly smooth and effortless to operate. It has been utilised as a daily driver and is fully prepared for continued daily use.

For drivers on the continent, the left-hand drive configuration of this particular Aston is a significant advantage. However, left-hand drive examples produced by Aston Martin are few and far between, resulting in a high demand for these vehicles.

An Aston Martin is a welcome sight on the road, and it always garners attention and admiration from passersby.
