ALFA ROMEO 75 1.8 TURBO ZENDER
The Alfa Romeo 75 is living proof that a saloon need not be boring. While most four-door cars are designed to ferry you from A to B without fuss or feeling, the Alfa 75 does so with character, temperament and a generous dose of Italian flair. Introduced in 1985, this model occupies a special place in history: it was the last Alfa Romeo developed before the full Fiat takeover. For many enthusiasts, this makes it the last true Alfa Romeo.
What sets the Alfa 75 apart is not just its distinctive, quintessentially eighties design, but its engineering. Thanks to the rear-mounted transaxle gearbox, the car enjoys near-perfect weight distribution. Paired with rear-wheel drive and a sophisticated suspension setup, it delivers a surprisingly sharp, sporting drive. Little wonder this layout later found its way into the exclusive Alfa Romeo SZ. The result is a saloon that feels like a proper driver's car, turning every journey into an event, even if you are only nipping out for bacon sandwiches and somehow end up three villages away.
Under the bonnet, buyers were spoilt for choice, and frankly, there was no wrong answer. The 2.0 Nord with carburettors is a glorious piece of classic Alfa engineering: raw, mechanical, brimming with character. Then came the legendary Twin Spark with its twin plugs per cylinder, delivering not only more power but an eager, rev-happy nature and surprisingly taut handling. Many connoisseurs regard this as one of the finest-driving variants.
Exclusive to the European market was the fantastic 1.8 Turbo. This engine gives the car an extra playful, lively edge, complete with that unmistakable turbo shove that makes every drive just a little more entertaining. Light at the front and punchy once on boost, this is arguably the cheekiest version of the range.
And then, of course, there is the Busso V6, an engine that has achieved near-mythical status. Not just for its performance, but above all for its sound. Even at idle it sounds special, and the moment you press the throttle you understand why enthusiasts fall so deeply in love. This is not an engine you merely hear: it is an engine you experience.
Whichever version you choose, the Alfa 75 remains a car with a soul. A car you glance back at after parking, a car that tempts you to take the long way home simply because you can. Driving as it was meant to be: full of character, emotion and a smile that comes as standard.
The car we are offering is a remarkably beautiful and exceptionally original example. It is an Alfa 75 1.8 Turbo from 1987, delivered new on 10 March 1988 to an Alfa Romeo dealer in Milan. Finished in the stunning Bianco Argento Metallizzato, a quintessentially eighties silver that suits the crisp design perfectly, paired with the signature Tessuto operato bottonato interior, a fabric that transports you straight back to an era when a mobile phone came in a briefcase and a turbo badge still genuinely impressed.
Remarkably, the car was never sold at the Milan dealership. It later moved to an Alfa Romeo dealer in Palencia, Spain, where it served once again as something of a showroom trophy. The business owner drove it occasionally, but a buyer never materialised. In an effort to make the car more appealing, it was fitted with a Zender body kit and matching Zender wheels. This kind of period-correct tuning was the way to give a car that extra edge back in the day, and today it is once again highly prized among collectors and enthusiasts. It not only adds presence but tells a story of its own.
What truly sets this Alfa apart is its odometer reading of just 17,468 km. The mechanicals are in good order, the bodywork is original and entirely rust-free. When the Zender kit was fitted, certain panels were professionally refinished in the original colour, carried out neatly and correctly. A wonderful detail: sections of the floor covering are still protected by the original factory plastic, something you rarely encounter.
Accompanying the car is extensive documentation, including original Zender brochures, registration papers and the official certificato di origine from the Centro Documentazione Alfa Romeo. This confirms its provenance and completes the story.
All of this makes for a truly exceptional, original Alfa 75 1.8 Turbo with a unique history, striking presence and a mileage you normally only see in brochures. A car that has spent recent decades being admired, now ready for an enthusiast who will use it for what it was built to do: drive and enjoy.
