The Alfa Romeo 75 is living proof that a saloon need not be boring. While most four-door cars are designed to ferry you from A to B without fuss or feeling, the Alfa 75 does so with character, temperament and a generous dose of Italian flair. Introduced in 1985, this model occupies a special place in history: it was the last Alfa Romeo developed before the full Fiat takeover. For many enthusiasts, this makes it the last true Alfa Romeo.

What sets the Alfa 75 apart is not just its distinctive, quintessentially eighties design, but its engineering. Thanks to the rear-mounted transaxle gearbox, the car enjoys near-perfect weight distribution. Paired with rear-wheel drive and a sophisticated suspension setup, it delivers a surprisingly sharp, sporting drive. Little wonder this layout later found its way into the exclusive Alfa Romeo SZ. The result is a saloon that feels like a proper driver's car, turning every journey into an event, even if you are only nipping out for bacon sandwiches and somehow end up three villages away.

Under the bonnet, buyers were spoilt for choice, and frankly, there was no wrong answer. The 2.0 Nord with carburettors is a glorious piece of classic Alfa engineering: raw, mechanical, brimming with character. Then came the legendary Twin Spark with its twin plugs per cylinder, delivering not only more power but an eager, rev-happy nature and surprisingly taut handling. Many connoisseurs regard this as one of the finest-driving variants.
