Ariel was a British motorcycle company based in Birmingham. The origins of the company can be traced back to 1847, but it was officially founded in 1870 by James Starey and William Hillman. In 1902, it produced its first motorcycle and soon became an innovator in British motorcycling. The company was sold to BSA in 1944 and the Ariel name survived until 1970.
