In the early 1960’s Ducati were a small bespoke manufacturer known for producing small capacity single cylinder motorcycles and although they were of high engineering quality they had limited appeal globally, until they embarked on a concentrated race program.

Fabio Taglioni’s ‘L’ v-twin engine design entered production in early 1971 with the first road bike - the 750GT, however it was Paul Smart’s win the inaugural Imola 200 endurance race in 1972 that changed everything.
The race bike was a fierce desmo valve’d 750cc with a light weight frame producing about 80hp. The opportunity to capitalise on this victory was too good to miss as it would put Ducati on the World stage so a street legal version of the race bike with the same desmo engine and green frame and silver livery was offered to the public. With just 401 bikes produced between 1973 and ’74 along side the 750 Sport model, introduced in 1972 which was a slightly softer non-Desmo valve version of the same 750cc bevel engine.

Genuine 750SS examples almost never come to the open market and when they do they rightfully command serious money, a recent unrestored example made $201,600 at a US auction ( August 2026 ).

This exacting replica built from genuine period components features a fully rebuilt Desmo engine with 40mm Dell’Orto carbs, Conti exhausts, Borrani wheels and AP brake calipers.
Built circa 2020 it has only covered 4,936 miles and remains in immaculate condition.
