One careful owner...
When we recently featured astronaut Dave Scott’s Bulova Chronograph, which he wore on the Moon and subsequently during re-entry and splashdown on the 1973 Apollo 15 mission, we suspected that RR Auction’s 50,000 US dollar estimate was conservative. Now we can reveal that, inclusive of buyer’s fees, the watch sold for 1,625,000 dollars, more than 32 times the estimate. In fairness, the Space Age was a hugely romantic time for those now old and wealthy enough to indulge their interests, and to own a watch actually worn on the lunar surface – complete with Moon-dust patina – is certainly an opportunity like no other.
