These quirky classic cars have been created by AI. Or have they?

Reality has become a fluid concept since AI image generators like DALL-E have stormed the realms of the internet. So when we found these wonderfully weird cars in the Classic Driver Market, we took them for clever mockups created by the mighty machine god – until we understood they weren't.

Images generators based on artificial intelligence like DALL-E from the creators of ChatGPT, Artbreeder or Waifu Labs have been digging in the common subconscious of the internet for a while now – and even old-school car enthusiasts like us have become used to the countless images of fantastic automobiles from alternate realities floating around social media. What if BMW had started building SUVs in the 1950s? What would a minimalist sportscar created by Apple or Leica look like? If you want to see the steampunk version of a Ferrari Purosangue designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the stone age, you can get the result within a mouseclick. Stunning at first, slightly tiring on the long run. While automotive media are discussing if the cars of tomorrow will be designed by AI, we realized while browsing the Classic Driver Market that the somewhat quirky, unreal and cartoonish aesthetics of AI-generated images already have their representations in car history. So are these 10 cars the real deal or just another DALL-E creation? Best decide for yourself!
