How to make the new Defender even cooler? Make it a soft-top

Despite raising a few eyebrows on its release, the new Land Rover Defender has settled into its very big new shoes well, and it hasn’t taken long for companies like Heritage Customs to have some fun…

We’ve seen some cool creations born from the simplistic shape of the Land Rover Defender. Just recently we spotted an ultra-rare Bell Aurens Longnose listed for sale right here on the Classic Driver Market, not to mention the dozens of drop-top, stretched out, leather-toting examples that seem to be snapped up in an instant.

Almost all of those examples have something in common, that they are usually creations made from the Defender and Series examples, but Heritage Customs want to change all of that, and have launched their brand-new, retracting roof Defender 90 for the modern era, called the Valiance Convertible.

Coined using a fabulously thought-up term known as ‘Carchitecture’, the team have brought true coachbuilding and design innovation back to 2023 and are allowing customers to fully immerse themselves in the configuration process. The exterior shade, for example, can be taken from almost any environment, be it from nature, or another vehicle. The brand-new convertible roof is opened electrically by the switch of a button, after manually releasing the latches, giving it a pure retro feel. Of course, a wide choice of different fabric hood colours are available, including a contrasting top of the roof, similar to the optional white roof of the standard hard-top Defender.

Just like the exterior, the interior of the Valiance Convertible is a space where clients can let their imaginations run riot, with an abundance option of customised leather, suede, chrome, wood and everything in between.

The Valiance Convertible is coachbuilt by craftsmen based on a Land Rover Defender 90 of the customer’s choice, with conversions starting from EUR 82,500 excluding VAT and taking around three months to be completed. Pricey, yes, but there is something undeniably cool about seeing a brand-new Defender drop-top, and one we’d love to cruise in sometime!
