Description

UNIVERSAL GENEVE - a gentleman's Polerouter Date wrist watch. Numbered 20461-2 2314602. Signed automatic microtor calibre 218-2. Black dial quartered with white lines, dot hour makers, silvered chapter ring, date aperture to three. Stainless steel case fitted to a signed black leather strap with stainless steel pin buckle. 35mm. In 1954 the airline SAS were the first to fly the route from Europe to California via the North Pole. This cut a thousand kilometres off the previous journey but required the pilots to deal with the strong magnetic fields of the Polar Regions. Universal supplied the pilots with anti-magnetic watches during their training and in 1954 launched the Polarouter to celebrate this achievement. The name quickly changed to Polerouter and the bumper automatic movement was replaced with the now famous ‘micro-rotor'.
