Description

The uber-cool sports saloon with the cachet of being Europe's firstturbochargedproduction carThe fastest BMW then produced with an output of 170bhp, a full 40bhp more than the TiiOnly 1,672 examples built, all left-hand drive and very few survive todayFirst imported to the UK on 01/07/1982, thisis an original factory carOn offer from a private collection, topical, extremely rare and highly collectableThe 2002 Turbo was launched at the 1973 Frankfurt Motorshow and was Europe's first turbocharged production car. With an output of170bhp and 240Nm/ feet of torque, it was the fastest BMW yet produced, liftingthat mantlefrom the superb 2002 Tii.Described by one journalist as a punch in the kidneys, BMWs new super-saloon quickly earneda reputation for being a bit of a troublemaker. From outraging the German press with 'irresponsible' cosmetics to tempting fate withturbo-lag that was a touch focussing, the 2002 Turbo ultimately rose to cult status.Equipped with a KKK turbocharger and Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection, the engineunit from the base 2002Tiiwas persuaded to producearound 170bhp, asubstantial40bhp more than the donor car.BMW claimed a 060 mph in just 6.9 seconds which was quite remarkable for a small saloon nearly 50 years ago.Only produced in late 1973 and 1974, when production ceased with the arrivalof the 70s oil crisis, there were just 1,672 examples built, all left-hand drive, andvery few survive today. Replaced in 1975 by the famous '3' series, it was the last car made when BMW was still regarded as a specialist low volume niche manufacturer. The car presented here is an original factory car thatwas imported to the UK on July the 1st 1982. In 2007, it was offered byrespected specialists, Munich Legends, having hadthe entire undersidestripped back to bare metal, repairedand any areas of corrosion treated, before being stone-chip primed.Three owners, later itwas exported to Ireland in June 2009, before returning to the UK in 2014.The car appears very original and well cared for and has probably enjoyed some fresh paint at some point in the past but still presents very well today. The history file shows over 4,000 spent in 2007 with Munich Legends, a further 1,400on servicing and maintenance in 2013/14 andnew front discs and pads fitted in 2016.The odometershows 8,919 kilometrestoday which we can only presume is a total of 108,919km which would equate to 67,680 miles.Sold by us previouslyin 2014, this very special car has formed part of a private collection, being maintained and stored to a high standard and issupplied with a UK V5Cand a folder of invoices. In 2018, a BMW 2002 Turbo sold at auction in the USA for an incredible $192,500 illustratingthe extraordinary surge in demand for these special cars. This is arare opportunity to acquire a significant car from BMW's past that is highly collectable and, perhaps more importantly, really good fun to drive.
