The introduction of the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow I in 1965 meant a radical modernization for the brand. In addition to the much more modern-looking design, the Silver Shadow also had a number of features that were new to Rolls-Royce. This includes disc brakes, monocoque self-supporting construction and independent rear suspension. The most striking innovation was the hydropneumatic suspension system that came via a license from Citroën. This system ensures that the car remains at a constant height above the road surface, regardless of the load. The system was first applied to both axles but from 1969 only on the rear axle when it appeared that it did almost all the work.
