Description

Gardner Motors was a St. Louis-based company that touted itself as “The Last Word in Motordom.” Gardner offered eight body styles for the 1930 model year, and most sporting among those was the Sport Roadster, such as the high-performance Model 140 offered here. Total vehicle production from the firm that year was less than 1,100 cars, and today, this example is one of just two Sport Roadsters known to survive.

Delivered on March 3, 1930, this Sport Roadster’s first owner toured extensively with it. Harrah’s Automobile Collection acquired the car in 1967, and since 1973, it has been part of the current owner’s stable of several Gardner automobiles. A comprehensive restoration was completed in 2016, and the car made its debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance® that year. The presentation is striking: the two-tone combination of silver and black paintwork with a black canvas top is accented by red pinstriping and chrome wire wheels. The passenger compartment and rumble seat are upholstered in red leather. Dual side-mounted spare tires with mirrors and a trunk rack complete the package. Also included are a canvas boot cover, Eisenglass side curtains, an original tool set, thorough literature collection, and correspondence with Bill Harrah.

This Gardner Model 140 was recognized as a Full Classic by the CCCA in 2013. With a fresh restoration and known ownership history by three enthusiasts, it presents an opportunity not likely to be repeated.
