In 1986, Mercedes-Benz dispatched its most powerful SL of the decade to the United States in the 560SL. The 560SL was the offer of choice in this class from 1986 to 1989. The car was also the heaviest of the 1971 to 1989 R107 SLs that Mercedes produced. The new 5.5-liter V-8 engine’s 227-hp did a fine job overcoming the additional weight without performance sacrifices. Top speed was improved from 110-mph in the 380SL to 130-mph with cars such as this model, plus it was quicker from 0- to 60-mph by approximately four full seconds.

The car received a new rear suspension and a limited-slip differential to better handle the added torque and power. Mercedes-Benz also added ABS for their four-wheel disc brakes, leather upholstery, an alarm system, and an airbag, all of which better suited the car’s original $48,000 price tag.

This 560SL is offered in original condition and looks fabulous in silver with blue interior appointments. Equipment for this car includes a removable hardtop, AM/FM radio, air conditioning, lovely burlwood accents, bright factory alloy wheels and improved lateral seatback support. This particular car is reported to be well-cared-for and has been driven sparingly.

The 560SL was popular and sold well with average annual sales exceeding 12,000 units, which outpaced the 450SL and 380SL. Mercedes retired the R107 chassis in 1990, introducing the first all-new SL in 18 years. Today, many enthusiasts gravitate towards the 560SL as it retains some of the original lines of the “pagoda” SLs while carrying with it all of the R107’s advances.

In the 560SL, Mercedes got it all just right, offering essentially bullet-proof reliability, satisfying power and aggressive good looks. It remains a widely held choice for enthusiasts who value verve and build-quality for an affordable point of entry.
