Using an aluminium 6,230cc V8 engine in place of the old 4,887cc six cylinder unit which had been phased out in 1959, Bentley’s S2 model was developed from the S1 on the same chassis. Automatic transmission, power steering and servo-assisted brakes combined to make a superb grand touring car. Despite the increasing trend of the factory towards body standardisation, a number of bespoke designs were produced by the few remaining coachbuilders. One of the most successful and highly regarded of these body styles, which lasted throughout the three S series cars, was the four door Flying Spur by H J Mulliner. This six-light design must count as one of the most handsome large saloons ever produced. With their separate chassis these S series Bentleys are especially significant in representing the final opportunity
