Not to be outdone by the previous day’s events at Maranello, on the other side of the Italian border Bonhams achieved a sale total of over six million euros. Cars sold included the ex-Michele Alboretto, 1985 Ferrari 288GTO for Eur 434,000, and an immaculate 1969 Aston Martin DBS Vantage for Eur 103,500.
The inclusion of a collection always helps an auction, and the Bonhams Europe team were fortunate to have two in this year’s Monaco sale.
The “Gran Turismo Classic” collection, comprising Sports and GT cars from the 60s and 70s, all offered without reserve, included the aforementioned 1969 Aston Martin DBS Vantage, as well as 1970 7-litre Iso Grifo (Eur 120,500 ), a 1969 Lamborghini Islero (Eur 86,250), and a 1969 Ferrari 365 GTC Berlinetta that sold for Eur 177,700.
The other was eight Aston Martins from a French collector that (unsurprisingly for the state of the market at the moment) attracted a large number of bidders, pushing many prices up beyond the pre-sale estimates. Highlights included Eur 225,000 for a very original 1963 DB5, Eur 203,000 for a restored 1960 DB4 and Eur 159,000 for a nice, Old English White with Bordeaux leather interior 1958 DB MkIII saloon.
The 1967 Aston Martin DB6 Vantage Saloon in need of a total restoration sold for Eur 51,750.

The Ferrari FXX was withdrawn prior to the sale, however in line with RM’s auction the day before, some good prices were achieved by cars from Maranello. The Alboretto GTO being one of them, its Eur 434,000 comparing well with Eur 440,000 for the red car the previous day, and Eur 506,000 for the yellow prototype. Neither the 1963 Ferrari 250GT Lusso Berlinetta, nor the 1970 Ferrari 365GTB/4 ‘Daytona’ Berlinetta found new buyers at Monaco.

The big seller was the almost unique (one of only three), 1952 Jaguar XK 120 ‘Supersonic’ Coupé going for Eur 753,000. This was double the pre-sale estimate, after a battle between an overseas telephone bidder and the ultimately successful bidder in the room. The car goes to the collection of a prominent European collector.
