Description
Chassis No. ZFFZS49A5Y0121530
Eight years after the passing of Enzo Ferrari, the company founder's famous affinity for the front-engined, V12-powered formula was honored when Ferrari debuted the 550 Maranello in 1996 – the first front-engined Ferrari flagship in a quarter century. In listening to customers of the Testarossa and 512, then-chairman Luca di Montezemolo learned what Enzo had long held to be the case; the public wanted a Ferrari with a more comfortable seating position, ample luggage space, and better visibility. Not only was the 550 more practical than the F512M it replaced, but it was also faster and better handling thanks to adjustable dampers and speed-sensitive power steering. The 550's centerpiece, a 485-horsepower, 5.5-liter V12, set benchmarks for modern supercars, including a production-car speed record set by Car and Driver of a 190.132 mph average speed over a 100-mile distance.
The signature detail of any proper Ferrari GT car was present in the form of a metal "gate" that guided the shift lever into its six forward gears. While Ferrari had already introduced the F1-style paddle-shifted transmission in the F355, the 550 Maranello continued to offer the glorious "click-clack" sound of the gate colliding with the gearstick when performing a perfectly timed shift. Its successor, the 575M, would also be available with a manual transmission but was most often specified without, making the manual-only 550 truly the last of its breed. Representing the best of the classic Ferrari layout – a sublime front-engined V12, rear-wheel drive, coupled with ideal GT usability – the 550 Maranello offers an analog driving experience unavailable in any modern Ferrari produced since.
This 2000 Ferrari 550 Maranello is a US market example finished in understated Grigio Titanio with the rarely seen and elegant Blu Scuro leather seats and optional matching dash, door pillars, steering wheel, and headliner. The accompanying clean CARFAX Vehicle History report appears to confirm that the 550 was delivered through Ferrari Maserati of Long Island in November 2000, and goes on to document a handful of owners on the East Coast who appear to have used the car sparingly yet regularly. A gradual accumulation of mileage is recorded while the report details a record of ongoing maintenance. Ultimately passing to a long-term owner in New Hampshire in 2013 with just over 10,000 miles recorded at the time, the 550 would be enjoyed for the next seven years in the "Live Free or Die" state, accumulating a further 8,500 miles.
Showing approximately 20,300 miles at the time of cataloging, this 550 has received significant recent servicing including a 2022 visit to Boardwalk Ferrari which included a battery and cooling system service. In 2023, a major belt service was performed by DriverSource of Houston, Texas, including the replacement of the timing belt, water pump, tensioners and fluids. Consequently, the 550 is presented ready to be enjoyed by its next owner, who will no doubt appreciate its rare combination of comfort, power, aural delights, and a driver-focused experience. Offered with its books, tools, car cover, and some service records, this is a representative modern example of Maranello's celebrated gated manual, front-engined V12 grand touring formula.
