Description

After 40 years of family ownership, we are looking for a real enthusiast for this 'ex Tonio Hildebrand' Sebring / Speedwell Sprite.

After an intensive restoration from 2004 until 2008, we took Tonio Hildebrand's Austin-Healey Sebring Sprite back to various circuits such as those in Zandvoort NL, Goodwood UK, Falkenberg SW, Le Mans FR.

In exactly the same colour scheme, condition and starting number 31, as first seen on 22 May 1960. Equipped with an aluminium Speedwell bonnet / engine bonnet, Gaston hardtop, aluminium doors and Speedwell instruments. The engine was tuned by Downton (9000 rpm). From 1961, tuned by Speedwell (John Sprinzel, please see the photos). Ies Langestraat, top seller at Austin importer Stokvis in Rotterdam, drove the first race in May 1960. However, after a few laps he lost control of the steering wheel and broke his elbow. After repairing the car, Tonio wore down a few sets of tyres at Zandvoort and various Belgian circuits. He also lent the car to Maus Gatsonides only for testing his first speed cameras. He sold the Sebring to Wim Booker around 1963 who was active at Zandvoort at the Pinksterraces, cold sprints but also at the uphill climb in Vaals. He gave the Healey its own colours: Red with a white stripe.

In 1965, the Sebring was last seen in the 'Stichts Racing Team', owned by Jan Kanters. After that it became a shopping cart and was often seen in the streets of Amsterdam.

This Sebring was a well-known sight in the early 60s. It is unique! The only Sebring and at the same time Speedwell Sprite ever to be delivered! The base and chassis / body used was from a 'Frogeye Sprite'. However, no part used at the time is the same. Below is a summary.
By Speedweel: aluminium doors, gauges, aluminium bonnet / engine bonnet, aluminium cylinder head, intake and exhaust manifold, steering wheel, gear stick, hardtop, front suspension parts, belts, etc.

Bij Sebring: special rear axle with larger brakes, Girling front disc brakes, separate brake/clutch system, close-ratio gearbox, wider rear spoke rims, H4 SU carburettors, adjustable shock absorbers, bucket seats, rear part exhaust, ignition etc. Patina is in perfect condition, professionally restored with an eye for detail and passion! Very extensive history and many original (racing) photos are available.
