The BMW 8-Series, carrying an internal code of E31, debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1989, just as E24 6-Series production was ending. While not necessarily a replacement for the E24, the E31 was instead moved upmarket, providing much higher levels of comfort, performance, and technology when compared to its predecessor. Engines available at launch were a four-liter V-8 and a five-liter V-12, with the latter providing BMW with its halo car, the 850i.

For the 1992 model year, BMW introduced the 850 CSi, which became the top-specification variant of the E31, seeing improvements by BMW Motorsport. The V-12 was modified substantially enough to earn its own engine code – S70B56 – and displacement grew to 5.6 liters with output rated at 372 hp for US-specification examples. Further revisions were made to the suspension, bodywork, and steering, and the 850 CSi was offered exclusively with a six-speed gearbox and staggered throwing-star alloy wheels.

This 1994 850 CSi represents the model as a top-specification example in black paint over a beautiful parchment leather interior. Its CARFAX Vehicle History Report shows just three previous New Jersey- and New York-based owners, who have collectively driven the BMW less than 37,000 miles over its 29 years. Pride of ownership is apparent with the consignor reporting that the BMW aappears to retain its original panels and finishes. Accompanied by books and tools, this 850 CSi is a classic demonstration of BMW’s ultimate coupe of the 1990s.
