The BMW Z1 was designed in 1986 by Harm Lagaay. It was unveiled in 1987 and exactly 8,000 units were built between 1989 and 1991. More than three quarters of these were sold in their own market, Germany. The most striking thing about this car were the doors, which could sink into the body. That body consists entirely of Thermoplastic, cast in body panels by General Electric. The car was also the first car in the world that could achieve 1G in bends with standard tyres, partly due to the bonnet with inverted wing and the transversely mounted exhaust that also had an inverted wing.

A 2.5L 6-in-line provided the drive. It delivers 171 hp at 5,800 rpm and 218 Nm of torque. The car has a five-speed manual gearbox and reaches 225 km/h. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h takes 7.8 seconds.

Initially, only 4,000 Z1s were going to be produced, but once the car arrived at the dealers there were already more than 5,000 orders and they decided to almost double production.

The very extensive, well-documented history consists of a file including the code card, workshop notes, registration certificates and the on-board documentation.

The colour combination was very tastefully done, the bodywork is painted in Green. A very nice contrast with the leather interior. The black soft-top is very nice.

This Z1 was originally delivered new in Germany, then sold in Belgium and registered in the Netherlands since 2002. All mileages were meticulously recorded in a logbook.

The body is sleek. The doors, sills, mudguards, bonnet and boot lid have a good fit. The right door has an abrasion/scratch, see the photos
The silencer is made of stainless steel.
The Z1 was recently serviced. Among other things, the distribution set and the water pump were replaced.

If you’re a BMW enthusiast and you’re looking for an original Z1 then this is your chance.

Given its age, the Z1 may have sustained minimal signs of wear / age over the years, see pictures.
