Description: March Engineering was started in 1969 by Max Mosely, Alan Rees, Graham Coaker and designer Robin Herd. They were a racing car manufacturer and Formula One constructor. Known for building cars for Formula 3, Formula 2, Formula 1, Indy car and IMSA GTP. Some of the famous F1 drivers who raced March cars were Jackie Stewart, Chris Amon, Joe Siffert, Ronnie Peterson, Hans Stuck, Jochen Mass and Niki Lauda.
The March 821 was designed by Adrian Reynard, sponsored by Rothman’s and driven by Jochen Mass and Raul Boesel. Five chassis were built. It was campaigned in the 1982 Formula One season. Later it became the design basis for the successful March Indy car chassis that won five Indianapolis 500’s.
The car here, 821-09 was entered in eight Grand Prix for driver Raul Boesel. It has a best finish of 8th place at the Belgian Grand Prix. It has a known ownership history and has been raced in recent years in the historic Formula One races in the USA.
Condition: Under the care of Tony Nicholson of Robin Automotive at Sonoma Raceway, who also took care of chassis 821-011 that Chris Bender raced to win in the historic Formula One Group at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. In 2020 Tony went through all four suspension corners to include wheel bearings, axles, CV joints, shocks, Heim joints, rod ends, brakes, the upper wishbones were made new and also starter & ignition box. He worked on chassis set up with spring rates, corner balance and alignment. A new wiring loom, instruments, rev counter and switches. New fuel cell and fuel delivery system. New lithium battery. Oil pressure safety switch to kill the electric fuel pumps. An original tub in good order. Reinforcement to rollover bar interface to tub. Fresh dyno time only 3.0 liter long stroke Cosworth DFV rebuilt by Chuck Cornelius at VDS. Fresh Hewland gearbox rebuild by John Grubb. The engine and gearbox were built in 2012, but not used. The car was started in March of 2022 with a video. A relatively fresh rebuilt car that is competitively priced and ready for a new home to be raced in the exciting Masters Formula One series.
Spares: Ignition box, roll around wheels, box of misc. track side support parts.
Of Note: Has older FIA papers, is eligible for Masters Series Formula One and Monaco Historic Grand Prix. 821-09 is identified by its original chassis plate, a continuous ownership history, research by Alan Brown of "oldracingcars.com" and identifying repairs to the tub.
