In the performance automotive world, there are plenty of greats and a few you could call special, but only a handful of cars may be described as truly legendary. The 1986 AMG 6.0 SEC neatly falls into the legendary category and has become an automotive cultural myth, a great car made even greater by AMG, the German-based tuning company with experience building and developing racing engines.

This is more than just a Mercedes-Benz hot rod; it is the car that virtually invented the Mercedes-Benz hot rod. It came from the mid-1980s, when there was the perception that money was in the air, every exotic and luxury automotive brand was brimming with confidence, looking to make a statement and one-up the competition.

The specialist company calling itself AMG (for Aufrecht, Melcher and Großaspach) formed by Mercedes-Benz engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher established their business in the small German town of Burgstal near Stuttgart. AMG started with the simple idea of taking Mercedes-Benz sedans such as the 300E, putting a great big engine and high performance parts in them and creating virtual rockets out of what were normally ordinary family cars and giving them aggressive monikers like “Hammer” and “Wide Body”.

AMG Wesmont, (Illinois) run by Richard Bauxbum, was the official distributor for AMG in North America and famously responsible for some of the most historic iconic AMG examples ever produced. The majority of these extremely rare early AMG cars frequently traded hands, were modified and their original documentation was often lost.

This Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC AMG 6.0 Widebody (#15857) comes highly optioned from AMG including:

Complete Widebody kit with front front splitter, side skirts, rear skirts, and USA specific hand formed steel fenders and quarter flairs
• Legendary AMG M117 DOHC
• AMG heavy duty brakes
• Widebody specific AMG 5-spoke Penta wheels
• Audiophile grade Nakamichi sound system
• AMG sport suspension
• Monochromatic trim
• 2:65:1 Gleason Torsen limited slip differential
• Keith Collins AMG floor mats
• Total MSRP: $144,208

The AMG 560 6.0 AMG was also highly successful in regional SCCA competition as driven by the second owner with original log books and period race photos.

“At Curated, we do not acquire cars simply for inventory but rather based on what the car is. We love interesting provenance, very low production, very low mileage, very special and often weird cars.”
