Description
1971 TRIUMPH STAG
- A 2+2 convertible
- Early Mark I
- With a matching and rare factory hardtop
- One of the few small convertibles from the 1970s that can fit a family
- Used to transport Prince Charles and Lady Diana at their wedding and has of course featured in a James Bond film, Diamonds are Forever
'The great feature of most V8 engines is the inherent flexibility, and the Triumph engine is no exception, pulling from less than 20mph in overdrive top with no shudder or transmission grab... It is... an attempt to enter the highly competitive luxury grand touring class of motoring. We hope it succeeds.' - Motor Sport, July 1970.
In 1971, a new Triumph was available in the U.S., styled by Giovanni Michelotti, it was built to compete with the ever popular SL class offered by Mercedes-Benz.
Stylish, fast and practical, the Stag would be the first Triumph to run with a V-8 engine. It came in convertible form with a roll bar already installed.
The Stag began life as a Triumph 2000-based styling exercise by Italian carrossier Giovanni Michelotti. A 2+2 convertible, Michelotti’s design featured a quad-lamp grille and sculpted front and rear ends, the latter destined to appear on many future Triumphs.
By the time production commenced in 1970, the 2000’s six-cylinder engine had been replaced by a 3.0-litre V8 based on an overhead-camshaft four already being produced by Triumph for SAAB.
A padded, ‘T’-shaped roll bar bracing the door pillars and windscreen was one of the Stag’s most distinctive features, and the model could be had in soft-top, hardtop, or soft-with-hardtop forms.
ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE

CONDITION INTERIOR
The interior is in good, original condition with the seats in very good order, the dashboard, door cards, carpet and trim in good order.
DRIVING EXPERIENCE
The Stag is easy to drive, but has the wonderful V8 burble as you accelerated away gently.
The burble of the V8 engine is a real joy to the enthusiast’s ears.
The Stag is a four seater with a good sized boot and was used to transport Prince Charles and Lady Diana at their wedding and has of course featured in a James Bond film, Diamonds are Forever.
