“Racing has played a major part in the development of all Aston Martin engines since Frank Halford designed the original 1.5-litre unit for Bamford & Martin. The 3,995cc 6-cylinder light alloy engine fitted to the DB5 is in all major respects the same as that which powered the 4-litre prototype which ran in the 1962 and 1963 Le Mans 24-Hour races.’ – Autocar, May 21st, 1965.
The DB5 was introduced in July 1963 and represented a further evolution of the preceding DB4 series rather than the beginning of an entirely new model line. The major change was the adoption of a 4.0-liter version of the (previously) 3.7-liter six-cylinder engine.
The DB5’s superb performance – 0-60mph in 7.1 seconds and a top speed of 148mph – ranked it amongst the world’s fastest cars.
Superior materials were used in manufacture, such as aluminum-alloy body panels mounted over a skeleton of small-diameter tubing, which was patented by Touring of Milan as Superleggera construction.
Its race-proven engine was also made of aluminum, including both the block and its twin-cam hemispherical cylinder head.
Beyond all independent expressions of its beauty and performance, which were well founded, the DB5 was endorsed by the most famous of all Secret Service agents, James Bond.
The 1964 Bond film, ‘Goldfinger’, made the DB5 one of the most famous cars of all time. Unsurprising as what man wouldn’t want to drive a beautiful car and imagine themselves as a wayward secret agent and all round ladies man.
With the DB5 being resurrected in the latest James Bond movie ‘Skyfall’ it has further cemented the DB5’s significance in both cult history and also in motoring history.
ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE
This Aston Martin DB5 is a very impressive restored example in the most desirable color combination of Silver Birch with a beautiful dark Mulberry red interior.
The car is beautifully and fully restored by one of the main Aston Martin specialist in the UK.
Originally the car was built on the 16th. Of June 1965.
The first owner collected the car at the dealer in 1956 after he/she paid £ 3.1413,16 GBP as well as £ 788,- purchase tax.
In 2006 the DB5 came up for auction at an Aston Martin sale. The car car was already waiting for years to be fully restored but unfortunately it never happened.
A very well known and one of the best Aston Martin restorers in England finally received the order to fully rebuilt this Aston Martin to the very highest standard.
Since then the car has been totally stripped to a bare shell and the body skin was removed from the chassis.
The steel work was bead blasted, repaired and powder coated.
The roof, boot and bonnet skins re-trimmed and all other aluminium work was done by the absolute best Aston Martin body workshop named Bodylines.
The fact that body lines carried out the body restoration results in the absolute superb fittings of the car.
When the body was finished, the Aston is finished in the correct Aston Martin Silver Birch color. The interior is in the correct Connoly 3086 dark red.
During the restoration the complete technique has been restored/rebuilt. The gearbox has been fully rebuilt with new bearings and seals etc.
The engine has been fully rebuilt und upgraded (not visible) to 4.2 litre specification with Cosworth pistons, new bearing, chains etc. etc. The cylinder head is built to lead free specification.
Other works which has been carried out during the full restoration are:
– all new wiring and new lights
– all chrome and bright work re-chromed
– heat and sound proofing throughout
– fully rebuilt suspension with all new bushes
– new stainless steel exhaust
– non visible air conditioning (a superb addition)
– an upgraded power steering system
CONDITION EXTERIOR
Due to the low mileage after the restoration and the fact that the body has been fully restored by the absolute best body shop for Aston Martin in the world named Bodylines the exterior of the Aston is impressively nice.
The fittings of the doors, boot and bonnet are excellent.
The chrome is in as new condition. The windows are in the same as new condition without any stone chips or damages.
The paintwork was performed to high standards and is basically unmarked.
The result of the thorough restoration is that the car is in a truly stunning condition.
CONDITION INTERIOR
The Mulberry Red interior of the Aston is very attracting and in our opinion the colour suits the exterior color of the DB5 very well.
The color is the period correct Connolly 3086 red.
The leather is in a beautiful condition with some very minor signs of use.
The carpets are high quality dark red wool. The headlining is fully restored in the period correct material.
The dashboard including all the switches, gauges and meters has been fully restored as well.
The interior can be best described as nearly impossible to fault.
The interior has proven it wasn’t just a showcase of period luxury, it was also very stylish and timeless.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT / UNDERNEATH
Probably the engine compartment and the underside of the Aston don’t need any explanation after reading the description of the rest of the car but we can confirm that the engine compartment was restored to the same high standards as the rest of the car.
The engine bay looks fabulous and is very clean.
From underneath one can see that the car drove on nice weather days but after some cleaning the underpart will look almost as new.
DRIVING EXPERIENCE
Driving an Aston Martin DB 5 is extremely special. Everybody knows the model because of James Bond and everybody seems to love the brand.
The upgrade to 4.2 liters makes the car even more impressive to drive. It makes ample power and the car pulls cleanly throughout the rev range.
This example can be driven on a daily base by an enthusiast or it can be used for long distance holiday trips.
The car has an impressive feeling of solidity to the chassis, suspension, brakes and steering. The clutch is easy to handle even as the gearbox.
It is very clear that this Aston is not only a superb looking example but certainly the best driving DB5 we have ever offered for sale.
