The flagship W116 Mercedes-Benz S-Class model, the 450 SEL 6.9, in the tradition of the acclaimed 300 SEL 6.3, made its debut in May 1975. Powered by an enlarged M100 V-8 engine that made its speedy predecessor so famous, the 450 SEL 6.9 featured competition-type dry sump lubrication and chassis enhancements. Advertised at 250 hp in America, where it found a brief but enthusiastic run for 1978–80, the 450 SEL 6.9 was hailed for its immense performance with purposeful luxury.
