Description
The flagship W116 Mercedes-Benz S-Class model, the 450 SEL 6.9, in the tradition of the acclaimed 300 SEL 6.3, made its debut in May 1975. Powered by an enlarged M100 V-8 engine that made its speedy predecessor so famous, the 450 SEL 6.9 featured competition-type dry sump lubrication and chassis enhancements. Advertised at 250 hp in America, where it found a brief but enthusiastic run for 1978–80, the 450 SEL 6.9 was hailed for its immense performance with purposeful luxury. It was also the road car of choice for many captains of industry as well as leading racing drivers of the era. In all, just 7,380 examples were built.
Displaying under 40,000 miles at the time of cataloguing, this impressively original 450 SEL 6.9 is presented in a striking triple black color scheme. Features and options include factory air-conditioning and a desirable electric sunroof. The car’s prior long-term owner entrusted its service to Mercedes-Benz expert Andrew Bach, who fitted the velour seat inserts, electrically adjustable driver’s seat with door-panel controls, and European headlamps. More recently, marque specialist Star Motors of New York carried out a detailed inspection and service, including attention to the hydraulic system. A rare, elite-level model in exceptional condition, this 1979 Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9 is simply a thrilling find for astute collectors and enthusiasts of the marque.
