Description
Chassis No. 879997
Engine No. RA3247-9
Lured by the Pale Primrose Open Two-Seater parked outside the diner, Donnie Azoff, played by Jonah Hill, strikes up a conversation with Jordan Belfort, portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio. From that meeting springs the company around which the entire plot of the film revolves. Few cars in automotive history need as little introduction as Jaguar's E-Type, which is surely why this sought-after first-series 3.8 Roadster, chassis number 879997, was chosen to convey its owner's wealth and social standing in The Wolf of Wall Street, directed by Martin Scorsese in 2013.
The E-Type originally left the Jaguar factory in August 1963 as a left-hand-drive example, finished in Golden Sand over a Light Tan interior with a black soft top, and was delivered new to Midland, Texas, through Jaguar Cars New York.
Toward the close of the twentieth century, it passed to a previous owner who would cherish it for nearly two decades. During that time, the E-Type, still powered by its matching-numbers 3.8-liter inline six, was treated to a bare-metal respray in period-correct Primrose Yellow over a retrimmed red leather interior. Its transmission was upgraded to an all-synchromesh four-speed example sourced from a later 1965 E-Type, while the cooling system gained an aluminum radiator and a high-velocity electric fan.
It was under this same ownership that the car caught the eye of the production team behind The Wolf of Wall Street, appearing on screen in 2013 with precisely the restored form described above.
While opinions differ as to which of the many variants is best to drive, most agree that the Series 1 cars, with their covered headlamps and clean lines, are the purest of the beloved E-Type, and that the Roadster, also known as the Open Two-Seater or OTS, ranks among the favorites for enjoyable fair-weather use. Fitted with its matching-numbers engine, this example presents a rare opportunity to enjoy the quintessential open-air British roadster experience behind the wheel of a genuine silver-screen star.
