Gooding & Co.: The Scottsdale Auction Jan 21-22 2011 - Preview

1999 Ferrari 333 SP - $800,000 - 1,000,000

With a collection of 11 Italian supercars added to an already impressive selection of sports, racing and classic collectors’ cars, Gooding’s 130-car 2011 Scottsdale sale looks like being a memorable one.

The collection is from the estate of the well-known, East Coast collector Benny Caiola and his family. It includes an example (one of just 30) of the track-only Ferrari FXX Evoluzione ($2,200,000 - 2,500,000), the 31st Maserati MC12 built (a 2005 car, estimated at $1,100,000 - 1,400,000) and a 1999 Ferrari 333 SP.

As the great Italian company’s last sports-racing prototype, the 333 SP is eminently collectable, with this chassis - available for $800,000 - 1,000,000 – in highly original condition, unmodified and therefore in a good position for Ferrari Classiche certification. Other Ferraris in the sale include no fewer than three 275 GTBs (1965 short-nose for $700,000 - 800,000; 1965 alloy long-nose at $1,100,000 - 1,300,000; 1967 GTB/4, $1,000,000 - 1,300,000) and an elegant 1955 250 GT ‘Low-Roof’ alloy Berlinetta for $850,000 - 950,000.

The latter is an interesting car. Delivered new to an Italian conductor, as an early model it’s eligible for the very top driving events such as the Mille Miglia retrospective and the Colorado Grand.

1962 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster - 'On Request' 2005 Maserati MC12 - $1,100,000 - 1,400,000

Speaking of events, the 1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS (officially ‘On Request’ for price, but likely to exceed $1.2 million) would be a shoo-in for pretty well all the world’s race meetings – not to mention road-based rallies such as the Tour Auto. Enthusiasts for the Stuttgart marque's more modern supercars will appreciate the 2004 Porsche Carrera GT, estimated at $425,000 - 475,000.

Another Swabian name, Mercedes-Benz, is well represented at Gooding’s 2011 Arizona sale. Of the 300SLs in the catalogue (a 1956 ‘Gullwing’ for $700,000 - 800,000, an ‘On Request’ 1962 Roadster and a $550,000 - 650,000 1960 Roadster), it’s the ’62 car which stands out. David Gooding describes the (red with matching numbers and factory hard-top) car as the “lowest mileage [just 7367 from new] Roadster in existence, an exciting discovery for Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts around the world.”

Elsewhere in the catalogue, the usual mix of high-end pre-War (including the 1931 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Henley Roadster at $650,000 - 850,000) entries join more desirable 1960s American icons such as the ex-Ricardo Rodriguez 1965 Shelby GT350 R ($650,000 - 850,000) and another very original two-seater, a genuine Cobra 289 ‘barn find’, now back on the road after 33 years in storage, estimated at $525,000 - 625,000.
