Description

Introduced in prototype form alongside the 300 SL at the 1954 New York International Motor Show, the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL brought the marque’s sporting style to a wider audience. Production began in 1955, with graceful bodywork recalling its celebrated sibling and a 1.9-litre overhead camshaft four-cylinder engine beneath the bonnet. Independent suspension and a comfortable, well-appointed cockpit emphasized relaxed touring, establishing a character that would become central to the SL tradition.

Finished in silver over a dark blue interior, this 190 SL is a distinctive example that makes a handsome appearance. Its most striking feature is its European-style 300 SL Roadster headlamps, which lends it an even closer resemblance to Mercedes-Benz’s flagship sports car. Whitewall tyres and its ivory-colored steering wheel further add to its lovely appearance.

In 2015, at Modena Classic Works in Italy, the 190 SL received cosmetic and mechanical attention, including to its engine, suspension, and differential, documented by photographs on file.

With its appealing color scheme and distinctive headlights, this 190 SL offers an individual take on one of Mercedes-Benz’s most enduring postwar designs, retaining the beauty and elegance that made the model so successful.
