Description
Seven years after the launch of the 308 GT4 with its Bertone bodywork, the Ferrari Mondial 8, designed by Pininfarina, was unveiled. Traditionalists had never accepted Bertone and believed that Ferrari bodywork should only be designed by Pininfarina. Structurally, the Mondial 8 was based on the two-seater 308 GTB, but was a 2+2-seater like the 308 GT4, albeit with more space. The name Mondial (World) was a nod to a Ferrari racing car from the 1950s. To create more space in the cabin, the wheelbase was extended by ten centimetres; the car was also wider than its predecessors. On 17 September 1983, the convertible version of the Ferrari Mondial Quattrovalvole was unveiled in Maranello, notably in the presence of Enzo Ferrari. The general public then got to see the open-top sports car in the US in October, which already indicated where the target market for this car was primarily seen. Indeed, the Mondial Cabriolet was the first truly open-top Ferrari since the Daytona Spider, which had been discontinued in the early 1970s. After that, enthusiasts had had to make do with Targa versions. When the 308 GTB was upgraded to the 328 GTB, the Mondial followed suit and was fitted with a larger 3.2-litre engine, which delivered 270 hp (255 hp in the catalytic converter version) at 7'000 rpm. The Ferrari Mondial Cabriolet offered here, fitted with a 3.2-litre V8 engine producing 255 hp, was delivered in November 1988 to Autodiffusion S.A. in Meyrin and registered in March 1989 by Graber Automobile in Wichtrach, Bern, before being sold to its first owner from Dübendorf. In June 2002, with 21'660 km on the clock, the four-seater convertible passed to an owner in the canton of St. Gallen, who sold it to the current owner as early as 2003. Since then, the Ferrari has been used only for fair-weather drives. The Mondial has covered just around 4'000 km over the past 23 years, and since being granted classic car status, the car has spent most of its time in the garage. The last major service, including replacement of the timing belt, took place in April 2017 at 25'246 km. Third-hand, with just 25'700 km on the clock, a complete set of documents and both keys, this sporty convertible is in good to very good condition and has recently had new front shock absorbers fitted. Due to minor parking damage, the front left wing was repainted a few years ago, and the interior shows slight signs of wear and tear commensurate with its age. The last veteran MOT was carried out in September 2026.
