Description
Anyone who had made something of themselves by the end of the 1960s and whose status allowed them to afford a slightly more extravagant car, but who didn’t want to compromise on four full-size seats and sportiness, simply couldn’t ignore the Lamborghini Espada. In all likelihood, they wouldn’t have wanted to pass up the hot-blooded bull from Sant’Agata anyway, for anyone who had once felt its rumbling breath would never want to go a single day without it. Known internally as the Tipo 108, the Espada was the fourth model from the brand founded in 1963, following the 350 GT/400 GT, the Islero and the Miura. As the first fully four-seater Gran Turismo, it was the result of Ferruccio Lamborghini’s efforts to offer a broad range of models. The Espada’s bodywork was designed by Bertone, with Marcello Gandini as the lead designer. Despite its height of just 118 cm, the Espada is a fully-fledged four-seater. The rear window slopes gently backwards and also serves as the boot lid. At its end is a second, vertical rear window designed to improve rear visibility. And if it wasn’t the design that won over potential buyers, then it was certainly the engine. A V-configuration twelve-cylinder engine was fed by an air-fuel mixture prepared by six Weber horizontal twin carburettors. The result was 325 hp, rising to 350 hp from Series 2 onwards (figures measured on the bare engine for optimised readings), delivered at a comparatively civilized 6'500 rpm. During its ten-year production run, the Espada underwent a number of changes. A total of three different models were produced: the S1 (1968–1970), the S2 (1970–1972) and the S3 (1972–1978). Each model generation was fitted with an improved engine. Only a few details of the exterior design were altered. The interior, however, changed dramatically with each model change. This second-series Lamborghini 400 GT Espada #7671 was delivered new to Garage Foitek on 1 March 1970 and first registered on the 11th of that month. The history of the Espada is unknown; however, the car was repainted several years ago from its original colour, ‘bruno’ (brown), to its current light blue metallic finish. In June 2023, the Lamborghini – with 70‘937 km on the clock at the time – was acquired from the last registered owner, who sold the car to the consignor in December 2025. This rare Lamborghini – only 578 Series 2 models were built – is in good, well-maintained condition. The matching-numbers engine and gearbox are in perfect working order, the bodywork is in very good condition and the original interior makes the 71‘200 km on the odometer appear entirely credible. The last veteran MOT was carried out in June 2023, meaning the Espada can be registered immediately in most cantons of German-speaking Switzerland.
