About the model line:
W 211
With the introduction of the W211, Mercedes-Benz opened a new chapter in the executive-class segment at the dawn of the new millennium—and, at the same time, closed an unfortunate one. Throughout its entire production run, the preceding W210 E-Class had remained under constant criticism. Rust not only attacked its bodywork with alarming persistence, but also left lasting scars on the reputation of Mercedes-Benz itself. The W211 was tasked with restoring that reputation, especially as competition from Munich and Ingolstadt had never been closer. The new E-Class had one clear objective: to become the benchmark of its segment once again. Nothing less would suffice.
Chief Designer Hartmut Sinkwitz deliberately drew inspiration from the S- Class. The distinctive twin headlamps remained, though now flatter and more elegantly integrated into the bodywork. Soft curves replaced the sharper lines of its predecessor without sacrificing its unmistakable identity. Elegance rather than provocation became the guiding principle. Few generations of the E-Class have appeared at once so contemporary and yet so effortlessly timeless.
Beneath the bodywork, Mercedes-Benz once again spared no effort. The electro-hydraulic Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) system introduced what was then a revolutionary braking concept, capable of preparing the car for emergency situations within fractions of a second. Optional AIRMATIC DC suspension successfully combined sporting dynamics with outstanding ride comfort. Intelligent restraint systems, adaptive airbags and a host of electronic driver-assistance technologies completed the package, making the W211 one of the most advanced automobiles of its era.
The engine range reflected the changing times just as clearly. Modern supercharged petrol engines, refined V6s, powerful V8s and a new generation of economical CDI diesel engines catered to virtually every requirement. The 2006 facelift saw Mercedes-Benz revise around 2,000 individual components. At the same time, the technically complex SBC braking system was discontinued, while PRE-SAFE became standard equipment. Performance, fuel economy and reliability all improved in equal measure.
The facelift also ushered in an entirely new generation of engines. At the top of the range, the E63 AMG made its debut, replacing its 5.5-litre predecessor. Beneath it, the most powerful non-AMG model, the E500, also received a substantial increase in output to 388 horsepower. As displacement grew by half a litre as well, the model was marketed in some countries as the E550.
Customers embraced the new E-Class with enthusiasm. Within only a few years, it had once again become the world’s best-selling executive saloon. By the end of production in 2009, well over one million saloons and estates had been built. The W211 was not a revolution. Rather, it combined the traditional virtues of Mercedes-Benz with the electronics of the new millennium. Classic comfort and modern technology existed in almost perfect balance.
