Volkswagen could reasonably lay claim to the “hot hatch” crown, as pioneers of the high-performance compact car. Before the Mark I Volkswagen Golf GTI began production in 1975, other manufacturers had trialled the formula for a beefed-up small car, yet it was the German marque to first find mass market acclaim. Over multiple generations, the Golf GTI has defined the sector and the three-letter abbreviation for Grand Tourer Injection has become a buzzword for hot hatch enthusiasts. Volkswagen moved the goalposts once more, however, when the Golf R32 was revealed for the 2003 model year.

Every bit as sporting as the earlier GTI, the R32 took Volkswagen’s Golf to another level. Improving on the turbocharged 1.8-litre petrol motor found as standard in the Mark IV Golf GTI, the R32 deployed a 3.2-litre VR6 engine—fitted as the performance option in Audi’s flagship TT coupé and closely related to the same displacement mill that propelled Porsche’s first-generation Cayenne—rated by the Wolfsburg marque for 237 brake horsepower and a 0-62 mph time of only 6.6 seconds. The R32 paved the way for later Golf R and other factory-tuned versions, cementing the model’s status as the definitive hot hatch.

This example is one of circa 2,000 Golf R32s made for the Mark IV platform delivered new to the United Kingdom in right-hand drive and three-door hatchback form. Completed by the factory on 5 September 2003, the car was finished in Deep Blue Pearlescent over a Flannel Grey interior notably upholstered in rare Alcantara fabric. The Golf R32 was specified with options including a CD changer, and Cruise Control System (CCS); the car was also built with option code “S0T”, denoting its build slot towards the end of series production. On 4 October 2003, the Golf R32 was registered for the road in the United Kingdom, with its first and only owner residing in Kent. Remarkably, some 23 years later, the VW remains with its sole and consigning owner, who has driven the car for just 390 miles. The car has been retained in storage for much of this time and its only instance of an MoT inspection was when it passed with 375 miles on the odometer on 3 October 2006.
