There was a time when Mercedes-Benz followed a simple but rock-solid principle: if there was room somewhere for a bigger engine, then that's exactly what went in. And if a body happened to come along with two doors, a low roofline and a profile you'd recognise among thousands, then the answer to the question "which engine?" was always the same. The biggest one that fits. Full stop. Over the years, this gave us a handful of Mercedes that were far too much on paper, and exactly enough in practice.

The W124 coupé from the '90s was one of them. The CL from the end of the last century, too. And at the start of this one, Stuttgart came out with the C207, the E-Class Coupé, and that badge I have such a soft spot for: the 500. Three digits that really only promise one thing. Room under the bonnet you'll never fully use, except on that one slip road at the motorway interchange, at three in the morning, when you just want to feel exactly what you've bought.

And what you've bought is a 5.5-litre V8 with 387 hp. No turbo, no fuss, no artificial breathlessness. Just eight cylinders doing their work with a civilised, faintly arrogant growl. Fire it up gently and it sounds like a conductor clearing his throat. Give it some throttle and you get a BWWWOOOAAAH that strikes exactly the right balance between "I'm in a hurry" and "I don't need to prove a single thing to anyone". That last part is precisely the point of this car. It doesn't shout. It simply knows.
