The MP4-12C is the first car McLaren designed and built entirely in-house since the F1. At its core is a carbon MonoCell, a single-piece tub weighing just 75 kg around which the entire car is constructed. The 3.8 litre twin-turbo V8 was developed by McLaren and manufactured by Ricardo, producing 600 ps in this specification, sent through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox with Pre-Cog to the rear wheels.

The biggest technical gamble was in the suspension. McLaren left out the anti-roll bars entirely and replaced them with four hydraulically interlinked dampers, the ProActive Chassis Control system. It keeps the car flat through corners without sacrificing ride comfort, something few manufacturers have replicated even today. The differential went too: instead of a limited-slip unit, the 12C uses Brake Steer, which brakes the inside rear wheel to eliminate understeer. The rear wing rises under braking as an airbrake.

Fun fact: Brake Steer was not invented for the road. McLaren developed the system for its Formula 1 cars, after which it was banned by the FIA. The 12C brought it back to the street.

De MP4-12C is de eerste auto die McLaren volledig zelf ontwierp en bouwde sinds de F1. Het hart is een carbon MonoCell, een kuip uit één stuk die slechts 75 kg weegt en waar de volledige auto omheen gebouwd is. De 3,8 liter V8 biturbo werd door McLaren zelf ontwikkeld en door Ricardo geproduceerd, goed voor 600 pk in deze uitvoering, via een zeventraps dubbele koppelingsversnellingsbak met Pre-Cog naar de achterwielen.

De grootste technische gok zat in het onderstel. McLaren liet de antirolstangen volledig weg en verving ze door vier hydraulisch onderling verbonden dempers, het ProActive Chassis Control systeem. Dat laat de auto in bochten vlak liggen zonder het comfort op te offeren, iets wat vandaag nog steeds door weinig fabrikanten is nagebootst. Ook het differentieel ging overboord: in plaats van een sperdifferentieel gebruikt de 12C Brake Steer, dat het binnenste achterwiel afremt om onderstuur weg te werken. De achtervleugel klapt onder het remmen omhoog als airbrake.

Dit exemplaar staat in Fire Black uit het Elite lakgamma van McLaren.

Leuk detail: Brake Steer is geen uitvinding voor de openbare weg. McLaren ontwikkelde het systeem voor zijn Formule 1 auto's, waarna het door de FIA verboden werd. De 12C bracht het terug naar de straat.

Au cœur se trouve une MonoCell en carbon, une cellule d'un seul tenant pesant seulement 75 kg autour de laquelle toute la voiture est construite. Le V8 biturbo de 3,8 litres a été développé par McLaren et fabriqué par Ricardo, développant 600 ps dans cette configuration, transmis via une boîte à double embrayage à sept rapports avec Pre-Cog aux roues arrière.

Le plus grand pari technique se situait dans la suspension. McLaren a entièrement supprimé les barres antiroulis et les a remplacées par quatre amortisseurs reliés hydrauliquement entre eux, le système ProActive Chassis Control. Il maintient la voiture à plat en virage sans sacrifier le confort, ce que peu de constructeurs sont parvenus à reproduire encore aujourd'hui. Le différentiel a également disparu: au lieu d'un autobloquant, la 12C utilise le Brake Steer, qui freine la roue arrière intérieure pour supprimer le sous-virage. L'aileron arrière se relève au freinage et fait office de frein aérodynamique.

Cet exemplaire est peint en Fire Black, issu de la gamme de teintes Elite de McLaren.

Anecdote: le Brake Steer n'a pas été inventé pour la route. McLaren a développé le système pour ses monoplaces de Formule 1, avant qu'il ne soit interdit par la FIA. La 12C l'a ramené dans la rue.
